SOUTH RYEGATE, Vt. — Friends and family have organized a softball tournament this month in memory of Jack Sweet, a 2016 Thetford Academy graduate who died by suicide last year.

Sweet, who grew up in Vershire and Strafford, loved to play baseball and softball, according to his obituary. He died on Aug. 30, 2020, two weeks before his 23rd birthday.

Last year, the family hosted a walk around Lake Fairlee to bring awareness to suicide and to prevent other deaths like Jack’s.

“We all miss Jack so much and it will be nice to gather, outside and come together to do something fun and raise money to donate to such an important cause,” Dani Sweet, Jack’s mother, said of the upcoming tournament.

The first annual Jack Sweet Memorial Softball Tournament is set to take place on Sept. 18 and 19, beginning at 8 a.m. at Mills Memorial Field, at 1741 Scott Highway in South Ryegate, Vt.

The 12 participating teams are paying an entrance fee of $200 dollars, but there’s no charge to spectators, said Dani Sweet. All proceeds from the tournament will go toward suicide prevention.

Clara Martin Center, the Randolph-based nonprofit that provides mental health care for much of Orange County, is slated to have people at the tournament to provide information and resources.
