NEWPORT — A jury has found a 52-year-old Newport man guilty of sexually assaulting a child 30 years ago.

Alan Wirkkala was convicted on two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault on Thursday following a two-day jury trial. The trial focused on charges that Wirkkala sexually assaulted the girl in Claremont two times between the years of 1985 and 1991. The charges carry a maximum prison sentence of 7½ to 15 years.

This is the second trial for Wirkkala regarding those charges. In August he was tried on four counts of sexual assault, but a jury acquitted him on two counts and came back hung on the remaining counts.

Wirkkala is facing more sexual assault charges stemming from allegations he abused multiple children in the 1980s and 1990s. Wirkkala first became the subject of a Claremont police investigation in the spring of 2018 after one woman came forward saying that Wirkkala had sexually assaulted her between 1987 and 1991, when she was under age 13. Three more victims came forward over the next year after his arrest, according to Claremont police.

A trial for several of those charges ended in a mistrial in June after a jury couldn’t reach a conclusion, according to prosecutors.

Sullivan County Attorney Marc Hathaway praised the victims in an interview following the conviction this week, saying prosecutors are “fortunate” that the women decided to come forward. Wirkkala is being held in prison, awaiting separate trials in February and April. His sentencing on the convictions is scheduled for Jan. 13.
