Verdicts mixed in Newport man’s sexual assault case

NEWPORT — A jury last week found a 52-year-old Newport man not guilty of two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault. But the jury for the case involving Alan Wirkkala was hung on two other counts, Sullivan County Attorney Marc Hathaway said on Monday.

Those charges represent just a fraction of the sexual assault charges Wirkkala faces in Sullivan County Superior Court, court documents indicate.

A separate jury in June also couldn’t reach a conclusion and a mistrial was declared. Last week’s trial involved separate victims from the June trial, Hathaway said.

The alleged assaults took place in the 1980s and 1990s; Wirkkala became the subject of a recent Claremont police investigation after a victim came forward about the alleged abuse, according to a prior news release. Additional victims later came forward.

Several charges are still pending.

“We will continue to try these cases,” Hathaway said on Monday.
