WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A Newport man charged with shooting a hotel guest in White River Junction won’t stand trial at this time due to his mental health. A judge in the case had previously said in court that the defendant in the case, Nathan-Mikheal Fuller, was found incompetent during a court-ordered evaluation.

Fuller, 26, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and other counts in connection with the shooting of a Massachusetts construction worker who was staying at the Comfort Inn in White River Junction last fall. He was ruled to be incompetent to stand trial at this time by Judge John Treadwell in Windsor Superior Court, according to court records.

Treadwell’s ruling, announced in court during a Feb. 23 court status conference, followed the judge’s statement from the bench earlier last month that an evaluation by a psychiatrist ordered by the court indicated the defendant is not competent to stand trial “at this time.”

Fuller, who police reported as making nonsensical statements after he was taken into custody on Oct. 7, 2022, has been relocated from Southern State Correctional Facility to an unidentified Vermont facility with “augmented treatment options,” the Department of Corrections said.

Treadwell ordered a “hospitalization hearing” to be held March 14 to determine whether Fuller should be remanded into the custody of the Vermont Department of Health to be placed into a state-run or state-contracted mental health facility.
