Local roundup: Mascoma boys basketball picks up impressive road win over Hopkinton
HOPKINTON, N.H. — The Mascoma High boys basketball team had the answers all night for host Hopkinton as the Royals rebounded from an early deficit to top the Hawks, 68-55, on Tuesday.
The win marks seven in a row for Mascoma, now 11-3 and surging up the NHIAA Division III standings as the regular season winds down. Hopkinton took the edge after the first quarter, 19-13, but the Royals answered back with 20 points in the second to earn a halftime lead. Mascoma then closed out the win with 25 points in the fourth quarter.
Zach Thompson led the way with 24 points for the Royals. Tanner Moulton added 14 points, Aiden Smith had 12 and James Thomas chipped in 11 points.
“The kids played with great effort and grit,” Mascoma coach Silas Ayres said. “Zach took over when we needed it and set up his teammates when we needed that.”
Ayers added that the support from the players on the bench made it feel like a home game at times. Winning breeds that kind of spirit.
Mascoma closes out the regular season at Berlin on Thursday and at home against White Mountains on Friday.
HANOVER — Freshman Ryan McLaughlin had 29 points and the Bears (2-12) used a quick start to earn the win over Milford.
Hanover opened the game on a 17-6 run. McLaughlin drained four 3-pointers and was an impressive 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Freshman Jaysen Oriol added 14 points, and Dave Frechette had 10 points.

PROCTOR, Vt. — Joel Roberts had 19 points to lead MVCS (14-3) to another big win.
Carson Meloon added 17 points, Abel Goodwin had 14 and Roman Goeppner had six points while pulling down 20 rebounds.
“We were effective at taking away their shooting and controlled the boards well, which put us in a good spot to take and secure a good lead early,” MVCS coach Erva Barnes said.
The Eagles host defending state champion Blue Mountain on Friday in a potential playoff preview of two of the top teams in VPA D-IV.
LEBANON — The Raiders’ Dawson Bates hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to play to cap a back-and-forth thriller with the hosts earning the win.
Bates had a game-high 36 points for Lebanon, now winners of four straight. The Raiders (8-6) visit Pelham on Friday night.
CLAREMONT — Senior Hunter LaRocque had 20 points to pace the Cardinals (12-5 overall, 11-4 NHIAA) over the rival Wildcats.
Senior Ronnie Winship added six points in his first varsity appearance on Stevens’ senior night. The Cardinals have eight seniors, with Devin Genes, Ty Theriault, Dominic Puksta, Trystan Lane, Jai-Lique Ribeiro and AJ Rozzell also being honored.
The Cardinals host Monadnock on Thursday.
ORFORD — The Raptors edged the Rebels at home, improving to 9-4. Rivendell is at Green Mountain on Thursday.
HILLSBORO, N.H. — The Tigers mo ved to 6-8 with the road win over the Hillcats. Newport closes the regular season at Newfound on Friday.
BRANDON, Vt. — Sydney Perry (19 points) and Sophia Rockwood (18) led the attack for the streaking Yellowjackets over the Otters.
Perry added 18 rebounds and Rockwood had nine boards. Audrey Rupp added nine points, six boards and three steals. Brianna Barton had five points and nine rebounds.
Windsor (15-2 in VPA D-III) has now won 12 straight games. The Jacks host Fair Haven (16-1 in D-II) on Friday night.
BRADFORD, Vt. — Maggi Ellsworth had 22 points to lead the Olympians past the pressing defense of Lamoille.
Emerson Fuller added 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for Oxbow (10-7). Ellsworth added three steals. Libby Swift had six points, 10 boards and three blocks.
The Olympians visit Spaulding on Thursday.
MONTPELIER — The Panthers improved to 12-4 with a road win at Montpelier.
Kelsey Bogie had 19 points to pace Thetford. Addie Cadwell added 11 points and Whitney Lewis chipped in 10 points.
The Panthers visit Randolph on Thursday.
SOUTH ROYALTON — Tanner Drury had 16 points to lead a balanced WRV win over MSJ.
“It was a good team effort. We were a little sluggish to start but got a spark from the bench to get us going,” WRV coach Tim Perreault said. “Ashlyn Rhoades continues to lead on both ends of the floor with good court awareness.”
Ella Perreault added 12 points and Jillian Barry had 11. Rhoades had five. WRV hosts Rivendell on Thursday.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The VPA D-II Hurricanes played a competitive game against Rutland, one of the top teams in D-I.
Maddi Willey had 10 points to pace Hartford (9-7). Charlotte Jasmin added eight points and Kamryn Brower had six.
The Canes are back in action on Wednesday at Woodstock.
WEST CANAAN — The Hawks closed with 20 points in the fourth quarter to steal the win from the Royals (3-10).
Gabby Pierce led Mascoma with 17 points. Freshman Makenna Houston made four 3-pointers for 12 points. Leah Larocque added eight points.
Mascoma hosts Berlin on Thursday.
KINGSTON, N.H. — Lucy Eshbaugh had 11 points, Keira Houdegbe added 10 and Sara Belk and Izzy Hamilton chipped in with nine each as the Raiders (2-13) snapped an 11-game losing streak.
Nina Ellingson had seven points for Lebanon, and coach Chris Boucher said she was strong defensively as well. The Raiders host Pelham on Friday.
CLAREMONT — The Cardinals kept things rolling with a blowout win over the Wildcats. Stevens (14-2) ends the regular season at Winnisquam on Friday.
MILFORD, N.H. — The Bears came up just short against the Spartans, one of the top teams in NHIAA Division II. Hanover (11-6 overall, 10-4 NHIAA) is at Hollis-Brookline on Friday.
NEWPORT — The Tigers ran their winning streak to four with a rout of the Hillcats. Newport (6-9) is at Hinsdale on Wednesday.
DANVILLE, Vt. — The Eagles fell to 4-10 with the loss to the Bears. Mid Vermont Christian is at Williamstown on Monday.
NEWBURY, N.H. — The Bears turned in a dominant performance in a race at Mount Sunapee.
Hanover’s Dahlia Fuld won the girls slalom in a combined time of 1 minute, 3.04 seconds over two runs down the course. Maggie Higgins won the giant slalom in 57.92 seconds. Sadie Higgins was second in slalom and third in GS. Reilly Loughman was fourth in slalom and second in GS. Riley McGuire took third in slalom and Ashley Cotter was fourth in GS.
Gavin Munson won the GS for the Hanover boys in 53.74 seconds. Owen Smith was second in slalom in 57.03. Adam Goodney was third in slalom and Ethan Munson the same in GS. Zach Tracy and Charlie Forbush took fourth and fifth in slalom. Ethan Munson, Andrew McGuire and Nick Reiss claimed third, fourth and fifth in GS.
Lebanon’s Roy Shapard took 10th in the boys slalom.
