LEBANON — The Lebanon High baseball team beat John Stark, 6-5, on Wednesday when Nick Brill hit a two-out fly ball over a drawn-in left fielder to score Sam Bates with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Raiders trailed, 4-2, entering the NHIAA Division II game’s sixth frame. Easton Wykes delivered a two-run single that landed in shallow center field and tied the contest, 4-4.

“We can put Easton anywhere in the field and he battles at the plate more than most,” Lebanon coach Chauncey Wood said of the senior, who also stole a base. “He came up big in a big moment.”

John Stark led, 5-4, in the seventh inning before Bates and Spencer Cunningham walked during the frame’s bottom half.

With two out, Bennett Hewett struck a bouncing ball toward the Generals’ second baseman. The ball clearly struck Cunningham in the calf as he ran, but no call was made and the bases were loaded for Brill’s deciding fly ball.

“These kinds of games are nerve-wracking but exciting,” said Wood, whose team committed four errors, bringing its total in its three games this week to 17. “This is what makes baseball fun.”

Hewett and Jack Clary each had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Lebanon, which trailed, 4-0, when it came to bat in the second inning.

Raiders starting pitcher Dawson Bates, who began the day with an earned-run average of 0.66, allowed five hits and four runs, only one of them earned, during 5⅓ innings. The senior struck out five Generals and walked four.

In the fourth, Daigle drew a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Avard. A Jack McGrath double and singles from Sam Sacerdote and Jake Toulmin highlighted a three-run fifth, which extended the lead to 7-0. The final run scored in the sixth when McBride led off with a single to center, stole second and scored on Sam Sacerdote’s RBI groundout two batters later.

Hanover’s pitchers struck out 13, led by Muirhead’s six in four innings of work. Boone struck out the side in his only inning of work, and Toulmin struck out four over the final two frames.
