HOPKINTON, N.H. — In his first game as Newport High baseball coach, Matt Robbins is in the win column as the Tigers defeated Hopkinton on Wednesday, 13-9.

Senior Karter Pollari was 4-for-4 with a triple and a double and also drew a walk. Shortstop Owen Beaulieu had three hits, including two doubles, and also closed out the game on the mound. Senior starting pitcher Makyi Matheson, who hadn’t played baseball since eighth grade, went three innings and gave up four runs, striking out two and walking one on 48 pitches.

“It feels good to get my first win as a coach,” Robbins said. “The team made errors and gave up a few unearned runs, (but) this was our first game and I expect us to have errors. Now we know what we need to work on at our next practice.”

Newport (1-0) is at Kearsarge on Friday.
