Local roundup: Hartford girls tennis earns first win

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Mark one in the win column for the Hartford High girls tennis team. The Hurricanes won five of six singles matches on their way to securing a home win over Brattleboro, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon.

Second singles player Maggie Dumont ended up with the clinching win for Hartford (1-4), earning a hard-fought first-set decision, 6-4, before closing it out, 6-1, in the second. Prior to that match concluding, Wren Parker (6-0, 6-0) and Anthem Philip (6-0, 6-1) had earned straight-set singles wins, and Harper Fallon/Jaklyn LaFountaine had picked up a 6-1, 6-2 doubles win.

Larkyn Moodie-Hamilton won the match of the day at No. 4 singles for Hartford, taking the first set, 7-6 (9-7), before dropping the second (2-6) and bouncing back to win the third-set tiebreaker, 10-7. Silvia Hale and Ceci Wendling added a straight-set doubles win, 6-0, 6-3.

Hartford will host Bellows Falls on Saturday.

Lebanon 6, Profile 3

LEBANON — The Raiders won four singles matches and evened their record at 5-5 with the win over Profile.

Aesha Soni helped set the tone at No. 1 singles with an 8-2 victory. Adaa Karanwal (8-2), Sophie Longacre (8-2) and Hannah Rich (8-1) also won in singles. Sono/Karanwal added an 8-2 doubles win and Longacre/Hailey Schibuola also won 8-2.

Lebanon hosts Conant on Thursday.

BRADFORD, Vt. — The Olympians remained unbeaten at 9-0 after a dominant win over the Highlanders.

Anastase Bourgeois pitched for Oxbow, striking out eight while allowing two hits in five innings of work. Catcher Makenna Simmons called a great game and gunned down runners at first, second and third for three key outs.

Oxbow took control with six runs in the second inning. Hadlee Allen was 3-for-3 to lead a 15-hit attack for the Olympians. Braylee Phelps, Faith Eastman, Bourgeois, Maggi Ellsworth and Simmons all had multiple hits. Lily Lahaye had a team-best three stolen bases, and the O’s had 11 steals as a team.

“It was a good game offensively for us. I’m very proud of the hard work these girls have put in,” Oxbow coach Chuck Simmons said.

The Olympians go for 10 in a row when they visit Randolph on Wednesday.

Thetford 19, Spaulding 18

THETFORD — Trailing by seven runs at two different points, the Panthers won a crazy game on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Thetford (5-2) has won five in a row and hosts Lyndon on Thursday.

Plymouth 15, Lebanon 8

LEBANON — Rya Wykes singled and doubled twice, but the Raiders fell to 2-6.

Ava Kaercher had two singles and struck out 14 Bobcats in relief of starting pitcher Nitara Murray. Ashlee Blashock had two singles for Lebanon, which hosts John Stark (6-3) on Wednesday in the third of the Raiders’ four games this week.

Baseball Plymouth 9, Lebanon 6

LEBANON — The Raiders, playing without three injured starters, surrendered seven runs during the third inning and fell to 4-5. Errors continued to plague the hosts, who have committed a combined 13 of them during their last two games.

“We battled back nicely, but we have to stop getting behind early,” said Lebanon coach Chauncey Wood, whose team played the second contest in a stretch of four games in five days. “It’s just a mindset. We’re banged and bruised, but we have to come out firing.”

Lebanon starting pitcher Dominic Calandrella surrendered five hits and seven runs, only one of them earned. He struck out three Bobcats and walked three. Easton Wykes and George Tafe, normally infielders, each pitched two innings of relief.

The Raiders, who had seven hits from as many batters, host John Stark (5-4) on Wednesday.

Spaulding 9, Thetford 4

THETFORD — The Panthers dropped to 4-3 with the home loss to the Crimson Tide.

Boone Fahey was 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI for Thetford. Xander Oshoniyi added a pair of hits. The score was deadlocked at 4-4 into the fifth inning before the visitors pulled away.

Thetford hosts Lyndon on Thursday.

Kearsarge 19, Mascoma 2

WEST CANAAN — The Royals dropped to 1-7 with the loss.

Brody Goulette started on the bump for Mascoma, which hosts Newport on Thursday.

Oxbow 8, Harwood 5

BRADFORD, Vt. — The Olympians recorded their first win of the season. Oxbow (1-7) is at Randolph on Thursday.

Rivendell 13, Poultney 0

ORFORD — The Raptors improved to 3-5 with the win and host West Rutland on Thursday.

Green Mountain 7, Woodstock 6

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps fell just short against the undefeated Chieftains. Woodstock (1-5) hosts White River Valley on Wednesday. The Wildcats claimed a 12-5 win over the Wasps on April 29.

Girls Lacrosse Hartford 15, St. Johnsbury 10

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes held on to earn the win and remain perfect at 9-0.

Hartford built an 11-2 lead at halftime and then did enough after the break to lock down the win. Addie Cadwell led the attack with five goals and two assists. Audrey Rupp added three goals and an assist. Maddie Barwood also had a hat trick.

Ella Perreault added two goals. Shannon Hadlock and Nella Bowen had one goal each. Martha Crasper had an assist. Goalies Dakin Kovatch and Zoe Zanleoni combined for six saves.

The Canes will host Rice on Friday.

Boys Lacrosse Woodstock 7, Rutland 4

RUTLAND — The Wasps received three goals each from Trey Jones and Griffin Piconi and Asher Emery also scored. Mark Van der Schoot had two assists for Woodstock (4-4), who host Mount Mansfield on Wednesday.
