Local roundup: Thetford baseball rallies late to beat North Country

NEWPORT, Vt. – The Thetford Academy baseball team pushed across five runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a tie and defeat North Country, 9-4.
Andrew Spooner had three hits and three RBIs for the Panthers, and Dempsey McGovern and Xander Oshoniyi had a hit and two RBIs each. On the mound, Boone Fahey surrendered four runs — three earned — on six hits with four strikeouts over four innings. Sam Parkman pitched two innings, giving up just one hit and JD Farrell closed the door in the seventh.
“Today's game was gritty. I'm proud of our effort,” Thetford coach Phil Chaput said “Andrew had a great all-around game, playing well behind the plate and at the dish. Dempsey had a crucial hit in the top of the 7th that propelled us.”
Thetford (9-4) travels to Hazen on Tuesday.
THETFORD — The Panthers took two games from the Rangers, winning the first game 11-0 and the second 14-12.
Thetford (8-4), ranked second in Vermont Division III, travels to Twinfield on Monday, then finishes the regular season at home Wednesday against U-32.
LONDONDERRY, N.H. — Raiders senior Birhanu Harriman won the boys’ 1,600 and 3,200 meter races and teammate Isabella Hastings won the girls’ 3,200 at the R.E.A.L Londonderry Invitational.
Hastings’ time of 12:20 was 27 seconds faster than the second-place finisher from Pinkerton Academy. Hasting was also 10th in the high jump.

Harriman won the 1,600 meters by more than three seconds with a time of 4:27.41. In the 3,200, he finished in 9:33.22, just ahead of his teammate, Thomas Wolfe, who finished in 9:34.69. Lebanon also had a fourth-place finish by Sean Miller in the 800 meters, and Tanner Ames was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.
Fifteen teams competed but team scores were not calculated.
HANOVER — The Bears had first-place finishes in 20 of the 27 events at the Last Chance Track Meet that also included Hartford, Windsor, Thetford and Woodstock.
The Hanover boys finished first in the following events: 400 meters (Justin Dickson), 800 meters (Mack Levy), 1,600 meters (Will Parker), 3,200 meters (Andrew Valentino), 110 and 300 meter hurdles (Ian Aguilar-Hwang), discus and javelin (James Chafouleas), and high jump and long jump (Ian Solberg).
The girls won the 200 meters (Mary Matter), 400 meters and pole vault (Casey Havrda), 800 meters (Poppy Collins), 1,600 meters (Lea Perreard), 300-meter hurdles (Eva Simpson), shot put (Anna Aaron), discus (Charleigh Olmstead), long jump (Daisy Onyango) and triple jump (Amelia Holtoff).
Finishing first for Hartford were Ozzy DeFelice in the 100 meters, Jack Fournier-Stephens in the 200 meters, Brandon Driver in the shot put and Flynn Moreno in the javelin. For Windsor, Kemari Wildgoose won the 100 meters and high jump, and Thetford’s Evan Rich won the triple jump. Woodstock’s best finish was Parker Pierce, who took second in the 100 meters.
Team results were not calculated.
BELMONT, N.H. — The Royal girls finished 12th and the boys 14th among the 17 teams at the Wilderness League Championship.
Top finishes for the Mascoma girls included Emily Brewster, Georgia Kondi and Emma Mullaly, who finished third, fourth and seventh, respectively, in the shot put, and Kondi was seventh in the discus. Jenny Lutz finished fifth in the triple jump, Elena Trempe was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles, and Braelyn Stone was sixth in the long jump.
For the Mascoma boys, Brody Albanese, Logan Gilmore, Trevor Maheu and Gunner Currier finished fourth in the 4-by-800 relay. Connor Cantlin was seventh in the shot put and Garrett Giovagnoli was seventh in the discus.
Kearsarge won the girls’ meet and Gilford finished first among the boys.
The NHIAA Division III state meet is Wednesday at Sanborn High School. The Division II meet is Friday at Oyster River.
