Local roundup: Hartford softball cruises past Fair Haven

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Marina Grassi threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and a lone walk and the Hartford High softball team routed Fair Haven, 15-1, Monday at the Maxfield Sports Complex.

Grassi had a single, a double and two walks at the plate and Logan Evans added three singles. Harper Robinson hit a double and Faith Brown had a single and a triple for the Hurricanes (4-2), who visit Brattleboro (0-6) on Thursday.

Merrimack Valley 12, Lebanon 0 (6 innings)

CONCORD — The Raiders suffered their third shutout, dropping the NHIAA Division II contest despite a 13-strikeout, two-walk performance by Ava Kaercher, a freshman who has pitched the vast majority of her team’s innings this spring. Merrimack Valley improved to 6-4.

Ashlee Blashock had two singles and Annella Marsh had another for the visitors.

Lebanon (2-6), which played without two infield starters because of illness and injury, hosts Plymouth (1-6) on Tuesday in the second of three games in as many days. The Raiders play 11 contests during the regular season’s final 20 days.

Fall Mountain 20, Mascoma 3

LANGDON, N.H. — The Royals (0-5) have been outscored, 137-22, this spring. Alyssa Webster hit her second home run of the season in the loss, and Anna Sullivan hit her first.

Mascoma visits Hillsboro-Deering (2-5) on Tuesday.

Newport 16, Conant 0

NEWPORT — The Tigers (7-0) have outscored the opposition, 103-15, this season. Newport hosts Monadnock (2-7) on Wednesday and nearby NHIAA Division III rival Mascoma on May 17.

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Yellowjackets outlasted the Cosmos in a slugfest, evening their record at 4-4. Windsor hosts Fair Haven on Wednesday.

BASEBALLConant 15, Newport 0 (5 innings)

NEWPORT — The Tigers (1-6) received two of their three hits from Owen Beaulieu and host Monadnock (9-0) on Wednesday. The Huskies won the NHIAA Division III teams’ first matchup, 26-0.

LANGDON, N.H. — The Royals (1-6) surrendered double-digit runs for the fifth time this season. Mascoma hosts Kearsarge (2-7) on Tuesday.

Bellows Falls 9, Windsor 5

WINDSOR — The Terriers led, 4-0, after two innings and dropped the Yellowjackets to 0-8. Hayden Pascarelli had two hits for Windsor, which committed 10 errors and hosts Fair Haven (4-4) on Wednesday.

Hanover 5, John Stark 1

WEARE, N.H. — Bears starting pitcher Sam Sacerdote allowed four hits and one run during six innings of work, striking out four Generals and walking one. The senior also hit a two-run home run during the first inning and later added a single, finishing with three RBIs.

Jack McGrath had two hits for Hanover (8-0), New Hampshire’s only undefeated team. The Bears host ConVal (1-9) on Wednesday.

Lebanon 13, Merrimack Valley 11

CONCORD — The Raiders trailed, 10-4, entering the seventh inning before scoring nine runs. The visitors hung on during the bottom of the frame despite having only eight fielders because of injuries. Lebanon committed eight errors during the NHIAA Division II contest.

Ryan Lundigren and Dominic Calandrella each had two-run, seventh-inning hits for the visitors, who also benefitted from Sam Bates hitting a single and drawing three walks. Starting pitcher Paddy Mooney allowed eight runs, two of them earned, while striking out six foes and walking one during 3 1/3 innings.

Reliever Nick Brill surrendered three runs, all earned, while striking out one batter and walking five. Lebanon hosts Plymouth (7-1) on Tuesday.

Hartford 17, Fair Haven 13

FAIR HAVEN, Vt. — Hartford starting pitcher Solly Flores exited with a 13-4 lead, allowing five hits and four runs, three earned, during a three-inning performance. Flores struck out two Slaters and walked two. He had two hits at the plate, driving in four runs.

Zach Johnson and Trenton Bird each had three hits for the Hurricanes (5-2), who visit U-32 (4-2) on Wednesday.

Stevens 6, Inter-Lakes 5

CLAREMONT — The Cardinals edged the Lakers to improve to 5-4. Stevens hosts Bishop Brady on Wednesday.

Thetford 13, Lake Region 7

ORLEANS, Vt. — Trailing by a run entering the sixth inning, the Panthers exploded for eight in that frame to surge into the lead and defeat the winless Rangers.

Boone Fahey was 3-for-5 with three doubles and an RBI, and Liam Brooks and JD Farrell were each 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

Xander Oshoniyi pitched four innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Farrell and Jacob Gilman were strong in relief to close out the win.

“We battled again today,” Thetford coach Phil Chaput said. “I am glad the players stepped up. It shows a lot of mental toughness.”

The Panthers (5-2) are back home Tuesday to take on Spaulding.

 

BOYS LACROSSEPembroke 8, Hanover 7

PEMBROKE, N.H. — The Bears fell behind, 5-0, early in the third quarter and couldn’t recover against the Spartans (5-4). Jack Gardner had four goals and Jack Wilkinson a goal and an assist for the visitors.

Henry Cotter made 14 saves for Hanover (4-4), which hosts ConVal (4-3) on Wednesday.

Hartford 17, BFA-Fairfax 3

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Joseph Barwood had five goals and two assists and Brayden Trombly and Austin St. Peter each had two goals and two assists and the Hurricanes improved to 9-0. The Bullets are 2-4.

Hartford, which also received a goal and an assist from Cavan Benjamin, visits Colchester (4-1) on Wednesday.

GIRLS LACROSSELebanon 9, Laconia 8

LEBANON — The Raiders held on after leading, 8-5, at halftime. Maddie Jewell had five goals, all during the first half, and an assist for the hosts, who improved to 3-5. Laconia is 0-8.

“Laconia made some good adjustments defensively and slowed us down,” said Lebanon coach Sara Ecker, whose team received two goals from Hadley Rich and single tallies by Abby Ripley and Audrey Newton.

Drew Kantor made eight saves for the Raiders, who host Inter-Lakes-Moultonborough (5-4) on Wednesday.

Mount Anthony 15, Woodstock 6

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Lily Gubbins had two goals and two assists and Isabel Konijnenberg had two goals but the Wasps fell to 2-4. Lila Beckwith and Hannah Gubbins each scored once for Woodstock, which received 12 saves from Audrey Emery and hosts Lyndon (0-4) on Wednesday.

BOYS TENNISLebanon 9, Coe-Brown 0

NORTHWOOD, N.H. — The Raiders (7-1) received singles victories from Nolan Arado, Will Katz, Kyle Hines, Finn Ericson, Baden Schifferdecker and Lucas Graham.

Arado and Katz, Hines and Schifferdecker and Ericson and Graham triumphed in doubles play for Lebanon, which visits Hollis-Brookline on Thursday.

Hanover 9, Manchester Central 0

HANOVER — The Bears’ singles wins came from Sam Ames (8-0), Nick Pais (8-1), Zach Pearson (8-2), Henry Werner (8-2) and Ian Holmes (8-1) as the Little Green had to forfeit one singles and one doubles match due to having just five players.

Ames and Pearson recorded a shutout victory in doubles, while Trevor Lichtenstein and Alex Orsino won their match, 8-6.

Hanover (5-1) is at Salem on Tuesday.

Bratteboro 7, Hartford 0

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes failed to win a set against a very tough Colonels team, falling to 2-4. Rowan Irvine came the closest at No. 3 singles, dropping his match 2-6, 3-6.

Hartford is at Rutland on Wednesday.

GIRLS TENNISBurr & Burton 4, Woodstock 3

MANCHESTER, Vt. — Hannah Watson won at No. 2 singles, Sophia Nisimblat at No. 3 and Charlotte Nunan at No. 4 but the Wasps (3-1) were shut out in doubles action. Woodstock hosts Mount Anthony on Wednesday.

Hanover 6, Manchester Central 3

HANOVER — The Bears dropped their No. 1 singles and doubles matches but improved to 8-1. MacKenzie Liu, Sophie Costa, Noura St. Hilaire and Campbell White triumphed in singles and the pairings of Liu-White and Shayna Rockmore and Hailey Pastel were victorious in doubles.

Hanover hosts Concord on Wednesday.
