Local roundup: Hartford girls lacrosse storms back for season-opening win
BURLINGTON — After trailing by a goal at the half, the Hartford High girls lacrosse team scored seven goals without conceding in the second half in a season-opening 9-3 road win over Burlington on Monday.
Addie Cadwell led the Hurricanes (1-0) with four goals and an assist, and Audrey Rupp added three goals. Maddie Barwood had a goal and an assist and Nella Bowen also tallied. Ella Perreault picked up an assist as well.
Hartford, which won its first state title in program history last spring with an undefeated season, includes players from schools across the Upper Valley — Cadwell attends Thetford Academy, Rupp is a Windsor High student and Perreault attends White River Valley. Hurricanes coach Heather Hartford praised the defensive effort of Perreault, Shannon Hadlock and Gabby Gilbert.
Dakin Kovatch made five saves for Hartford, which travels to Brattleboro on Wednesday.
MERRIMACK, N.H. — The defending NHIAA Division I state champion Bears opened their season with a road win, taking all three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches.
Hanover’s victories in singles came from junior Zach Pearson (8-1 at No. 2), sophomore Ryder Wilson (8-1 at No. 3), sophomore Ming Liu (8-6 at No. 4) and first-year Ray Menkov (8-3 at No. 6).
At No. 1 doubles, sophomores Sam Ames and Alex Orsino pulled out an 8-4 win. The No. 2 pairing of Wilson and sophomore Ian Holmes won 8-1, as did the No. 3 duo of Liu and junior Henry Werner.
The Bears (1-0) are at Bedford on Friday in a rematch of last year’s championship. Prior to Hanover winning the title in 2022, the Bulldogs had won eight consecutive state crowns.
