East Thetford, Vt. — Karl Clinton Tilden, Jr., 80, was born to Karl Sr. and Hester E. (Rogers) Tilden on Feb. 1, 1938 in Sharon, Vt. They lived in Norwich and Wilder, Vt. before settling in East Thetford, Vt. Karl Jr. was a Thetford Academy graduate in 1956. He then joined the U.S Air Force in active duty from 1956 to 1960, working on F86D Aircraft. Upon returning home, Karl Jr. met and married Janet Clark on Dec. 31, 1960 in a blizzard, thus never actually reaching their honeymoon destination!

Karl Jr. liked to stay busy and was an active member of his community and many clubs, including being a Past Exalted Ruler and member of Lebanon Lodge #2099 of B.P.O.E.V. for 50 years, a dedicated Mason for 50 years, a charter member of Thetford Volunteer Fire Department from inception in 1960, as well as serving as second chief from 1963 to 1967, Thetford Fast Squad from 1968 to 1998, and the Upper Valley Ambulance. He was also a member of Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine, Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley’s of Burlington and Montpelier, an Honor Guard for American Legions Post #26, and a selectman in the town of Thetford from 1966 to 1969, and member of the United Church of Thetford, of which he joined at the age of 14, and associate member of United Methodist Church in Lebanon, N.H.

Karl Jr.’s hobbies included a love of photography and volunteering his many skills as a carpenter for Habitat for Humanity, where he formed great and lasting friendships.

Karl Jr. worked for: Trumbull-Nelson from 1960 to 1962; Uline-Menard 1962 to 1967; and retired from Dartmouth College Carpenter Shop 1976 to 2003

Karl Jr. is survived by his children, Wayne and wife, Cindy, of Vershire, Vt, Karen (Tilden) Rogers, and husband Allen, of Plainfield, NH, Kendra (Tilden) Waterbury, and husband Patrick, of East Thetford, his grandchildren, Robert, and wife Jessica, Tilden, Clinton Tilden, Sierra Rogers, and Hannah and Hunter Waterbury, as well as great grandson Ryder Tilden. And a sister, Phyllis (Tilden) and husband David Fitzgerald, of Florida, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and longtime companion, Beverly Slack, of Thetford Center as well as her children and grandchildren all whom adored Karl.

Karl Jr. was predeceased by his parents, Karl Sr. and Hester (Rogers) Tilden, his sister, Jean (Tilden) Bushway, Janet (Clark) Tilden, mother of his three children, his granddaughter Jasmine Rogers and his great friend, Gerard “Sonny” Menard.

Karl will be remembered by his friendly personality and willingness to lend a hand when needed and for his incredible talents in woodworking. He was a man of integrity in his work and friendships. He was always a perfectionist, not afraid to put in the time and efforts to make things “just right”.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the Bayada hospice Team for their excellent care and support.

At Karl Jr.’s request, his body has been donated to the Geisel school of Medicine at Dartmouth. A memorial in celebration of Karl Jr.’s life will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 3 p.m. at the North Thetford Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any monetary donations be sent to the Thetford Volunteer Fire Department and/or volunteer F.A.S.T Squad at 2829 Route 113, Thetford Center VT, 05075 or to help out a person in need or simply perform a random act of kindness.
