Grantham, N.H. — John F. Kavanagh Sr., 79, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018. He was born on July 10, 1939 in Lowell, Mass. to the late John & Mary Ellen (Mosscrop) Kavanagh. John grew up in Forge Village, Mass. and graduated from Keith Academy in Lowell. He attended Boston College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and North Eastern University where he earned his Masters degree in history. John went on to earn his PhD in history at the University of Maine in Orono. John was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Hanover. He worked for Dartmouth College for 24 years as the Director of Sponsored Projects, (formerly the office of Grants and Contracts). While at Dartmouth, John was an active member of the National Council of University Research Administrators, The Council on Government Relations and worked with the Federal Demonstration Partnership.

John was an avid reader and loved history. He was a loyal fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, loved spending time with his family and especially adored his grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife Ellen Kavanagh of Grantham; their children Maureen Kavanagh of Keene, N.H., Margaret Beauchamp and husband Dave of Swanzey, N.H., Shelagh Eastridge and husband Glen of Windsor, Vt., John F. Kavanagh Jr. and wife Kathryn Parakilas of Wilbraham, Mass.; a sister Mary McMurrer of Elliot, Maine; and eight grandchildren: Richard, Ethan, Marcus, Hannah, Ava, Maggie, Lauren and Jack; and one great-grandchild, Shyleigh.

Family and friends are invited to John’s memorial mass at St. Denis Catholic Church in Hanover on Monday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. There will be a reception immediately after the service at the church. A private burial will be scheduled at a later date.
