NEWPORT — A 35-year-old Claremont man pleaded guilty to shooting another man in the leg in downtown Claremont last May and was sentenced to 5 to 10 years in state prison, Sullivan County prosecutors said in a news release.

Nathan Pillsbury pleaded guilty in Sullivan County Superior Court on Tuesday to a charge of first degree assault with a deadly weapon in the shooting of Ty Fowler in the leg during an early morning altercation near the Main Street bridge and Sugar River Mills in downtown Claremont on May 16.

Pillsbury, who lived on Adams Avenue, initially had been charged with attempted murder.

Pillsbury also pleaded guilty to charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and falsification of physical evidence, for which he received sentences of 3½ years to 7 years, the former to be served concurrently with the assault sentence and the latter to be served consecutively but suspended for a period of five years beginning from his release on the assault sentence.

A later charge of conspiracy to witness tamper was brought against Pillsbury after he allegedly conspired with another individual to have Fowler sign a statement falsely asserting that Pillsbury was not the assailant, according to the Sullivan County Attorney’s office. Pillsbury pleaded guilty to the witness tampering charge and was sentenced from 3½ years to seven years, to be served consecutively to the other sentences but all suspended for five years beginning from the release of his assault sentence.
