NEWPORT — A 27-year-old Claremont man is facing an attempted murder charge after allegedly beating a woman with a baseball bat, according to a news release from Claremont police.

Brad Young pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Sullivan Superior Court in Newport to a charge of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and criminal threatening with a deadly weapon in relation to an assault in Claremont on Monday morning, according to the release.

Young was ordered held without bail pending an evidentiary hearing planned within the next few weeks, according to prosecutors.

Police were called to Factory Street in Claremont around 9:50 a.m. Monday after receiving “numerous” calls about a man beating a woman with a baseball bat, the release said. When they arrived they found the woman bleeding from her head, and Young holding a bat.

The woman was taken to Valley Regional Hospital, where she was treated for “several lacerations” to her face and head, the release said.

Claremont Police Chief Mark Chase said the two were not involved in a relationship and police do not believe the assault was related to drugs or robbery.

He said the woman and Young both live in the neighborhood around Factory Street, and that the two are “known to each other,” but declined to say how they came into contact Monday morning.

The police affidavit was not immediately available late Tuesday afternoon, and Chase declined to release the woman’s name.
