HARTFORD — Democrats once again prevailed in the race for three Senate seats representing the Windsor district in Montpelier.

Incumbent Democrats Rebecca White of Hartford came in first of seven candidates with 17,930 votes, and Alison Clarkson, of Woodstock, was second with 17,864 votes from the 26 towns the district encompasses.

Joe Major of Hartford clinched the third seat with 16,791 votes.

The Democrats beat out Republicans Andrea Murray and Jack Williams, both of Weathersfield, who earned 12,317 and 10,843 votes, respectively. Ludlow Republican Jonathan Gleason came in sixth with 10,719 votes and Independent Marc Nemeth, of Royalton, came in last place with 2,903 votes.

Major will take the seat vacated by state Sen. Dick McCormack, D-Bethel, who is retiring after 30 years in office.

“It is pretty tremendous I have to say,” Major said in a Wednesday phone interview. “It’s gratifying that people put their trust in you to help make their lives better.”

Major, an African American, said he hopes his win “gives credence to young people that are minorities because they can run and be represented as well.”
