WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — As a youngster, Charlotte Jasmin would come to Hartford High basketball games and stare up at the banner with the names of the five 1,000-point scorers to wear the red, white and blue.

The only question on her mind? If her longer name would fit on the slim banner when all the years later, she crossed a threshold that felt destined for her.

Jasmin put her name on the banner at last, scoring the seven points she needed to hit 1,000 for her high school — plus an extra 25 on the night — as the Hurricanes rolled past previously unbeaten White River Valley, 60-32, in front of a capacity crowd on Wednesday night.

The Canes (5-1) exploded out of the gate, pouring in 27 points in the first quarter for a 17-point advantage that they maintained and grew throughout the night despite spirited efforts from the visiting Wildcats (5-1).

Jasmin became the first junior to break the 1,000-point mark in Hartford history and, more notably, the first girls basketball player to do so in the school’s long history.

“Came in a little nervous; just wanted to get it over with and then play the rest of the game,” said Jasmin of her accomplishment.

Needing those seven points, Jasmin scored a pair of layups to draw within three of the mark. Then, after missing a corner 3-pointer, an offensive rebound ended up right back in her hands on the left wing.

Confetti cannons were fired off, music played over the speakers of the gymnasium and Jasmin’s parents and sister joined her on the floor with a commemorative custom-made banner for the official photo.

But Jasmin wasn’t done for the night yet.

A possession later, she connected from NBA range, then followed with another bomb from the right wing right after that. Combined with a pair of corner threes from Izzy Sirois, the Hurricanes drilled five triples in the opening quarter.

White River Valley tightened up and forced a few more turnovers to keep the margin where it was for the second quarter, but a Hartford surge in the third quarter all but iced out any chance of a comeback.

Hannah Collins and Logan Scott paced a balanced Wildcats attack with eight points each. White River Valley saw great success in working through the Hartford press, but a lack of finishing opportunities at the rim and at the free-throw line ultimately cost them in a game where elite execution was required.

“We executed when we needed to and made shots early. They’re a good team; they’ll play to the end. We were a little better than them tonight, and it really helps when you have someone like No. 4,” said Hartford coach Steve Landon, referring to Jasmin.

“She’s a special kid,” said Landon, growing emotional. “We have a great relationship. She’s not done, though. This is just one goal.”

Chief among those goals is making the trip to Barre Auditorium for a chance at a state championship. The Hurricanes last reached the VPA semifinals in a pandemic-affected 2021 year and won the state championship in their lone finals appearance in 2012.

At 5-1 and with their only loss coming to powerhouse St. Johnsbury, the Canes look well on their way there but have a tough league schedule still to get through.

All of that was forgotten just a little bit on Wednesday night as Jasmin was mobbed on the court, surrounded by friends, family and fans as “Rock You Like A Hurricane” played over the gym speakers.

One final question for Landon: Did he know the defining three was going in?

“Oh yeah. I knew it was going in,” he said. “I’ve spent enough time in the gym to know when her shot’s going to fall.”

Hartford travels to Mount Anthony on Saturday. White River Valley travels to Springfield on the same date.
