The Upper Valley Running Club was well-represented at the 2022 Covered Bridges Half Marathon, which took place at Suicide Six Ski Area in South Pomfret on June 5.

Top performers among locals belonged to Charlie Buttrey, 63, of Thetford and Sara Staats, 46, of Hanover. Buttrey and Staats each won their age group, with Buttrey coming in at 1 hour, 32 minutes and 31 seconds and Staats finishing in 1:34:06.

Other UVRC members in the top 10 in their respective age groups included Elizabeth Gonnerman, 77, of Hanover (2nd, 2:38:37); Greg Morano, 26, of West Lebanon (4th, 1:28:38); Amy Olson, 47, of Lebanon (6th, 1:42:21); Rob Daniels, 60, of Canaan (6th, 1:38:21); Felix Herron, 24, of Hanover (8th, 1:34:15); and Colin Smith, 46, of Lebanon (9th, 1:37:50). Herron was running as a pacer, which made his time slower than it otherwise would have been.

Those eight were among 23 runners from the UVRC. The overall men’s winner was Matthew Phipps, a 23-year-old White River Junction resident, who finished in 1:10:42.

The half marathon, which was first held in 1992 and has been run along the same route since 1997, attracted runners from as far away as Wisconsin, Texas and Colorado, and is operated by a non-profit organization in Woodstock. Proceeds were donated to Upper Valley charities, including David’s House, The Family Place, Positive Tracks, Upper Valley Haven and WISE. Registration, which opened in December, sold out within six minutes.
