It’s time to tee it up.

Upper Valley high school golf has a rich history of success. It extended last season when Hartford High rolled to a Southern Vermont League crown before adding a VPA Division II state championship for the second time in five years.

On top of that, Hanover gave Concord a scare at NHIAA D-I states, and Lebanon and Stevens qualified in D-III. More of the same can be expected this fall, both from programs accustomed to winning and those continuing to grow and teach the game.

Here’s a peek at the teams:

Hanover

Coaches: Head coach Joshua Flanders (second year); assistants Zach Flanders (second year), Vince Kimball (second year), Brendan Doyle (second year), Robb Cramer (first year).

Last year: Runner-up to Concord at state tournament.

League: NHIAA Division I.

Home course: Montcalm Golf Club, Enfield.

Returners: Seniors — Beckett Sobel, Gus Thompson. Juniors — Andrew Cramer, captain, Joseph Desimone. Sophomores — Ben Ames, JJ Bornstein, Julian Hart, William DeSimone, Jamie Coughlin.

Newcomers: Seniors — Ezra McGinley-Smith. Juniors — Ryan O’Hern, Chris Ryckman. Sophomores — Hayden Clapp, Zach McCarthy, Cooper Sobel.

Outlook: With one of the best golfers in the state, junior Andrew Cramer, the Bears are confident of competing again for the state championship.

“We expect Andrew to be hovering at or under par at every course we play this year. He’s mentally strong and has been competing for years,” Flanders said.

The team’s returners have all improved their games, Flanders said, and Hanover also has a lot of youth with eight sophomores.

“We had a lot of kids try out this fall, kids switching sports, and I think that speaks to what we’re building here for Hanover golf,” Flanders said. “Our strong, young core and our 3-to-1 athlete-to-coach ratio allows us to focus on development and projects an optimistic future for Hanover golf.”

Hartford

Coach: Erin Stevens (fourth year).

Last year: VPA Division II and Southern Vermont League champions.

Leagues: VPA Division II, Southern Vermont League.

Home course: The Quechee Club.

Returners: Seniors — Matthew Tsouknakis, Rowan Irvine. Juniors — Thomas Thorburn. Sophomores — Teelin Nowlan.

Newcomers: Seniors — Jack Grigsby. Juniors — Sam Grigsby, Carter Williams.

Outlook: “We have a strong mix of new and returning players this season,” coach Erin Stevens said. “The team will rely on the experience and leadership from Thomas (Thorburn) and Matthew (Tsouknakis), not just in big events but in the everyday routines of practice. The team already has strong chemistry and is working together to improve each day to reach their goals as a team.”

Lebanon

Coach: Steve Roberts (second year).

Last year: Eighth in NHIAA Division III state tournament.

League: NHIAA Division III.

Home Course: Eastman Golf Links, Grantham.

Returners: Seniors — Ben Britton, captain, Brett Thorpe, Nick Petrucci, Kyle Hines, Nate Dube. Juniors — Ben Benes, Lodi Scholtz. Sophomores — Braeden Rogers, Nate Crane.

Newcomers: Juniors — Ryan Lundrigan, Nick Pace. Sophomores — Andrew Berndsen, Marek Rogers.

Outlook: Raider coach Steve Roberts sees potential this year and in the years ahead with 13 golfers on varsity and 15 on JV. He calls Ben Britton, who was third in the individual tournament last fall and turned in a solid showing in the New England championship, one of the best in the division.

“Much deeper team this year,” Roberts said. “We’ll see how it turns out. I think Nick Pace could push Ben this year, which can only benefit the team.”

Stevens

Coaches: Ryan Seaver (ninth year), Alex Herzog (fourth year).

Last year: Seventh place in the NHIAA Division III state tournament.

League: NHIAA Division III.

Home course: Claremont Country Club.

Returners: Seniors — Aubree Herzog, Ian Gersberg, Justin Demars, Josh Petrin. Juniors — Elli Girard, Oliver Beeman. Sophomores — Owen Wilkinson.

Newcomers: Sophomore — Kaeden Ryan. Freshmen — Raegyn Brothers, Wes Merriam.

Outlook: Coach Ryan Seaver is confident he has a top-tier team in the Cardinals, who he believes are capable of competing for a state championship. Wilkinson was first-team all-state as a freshman, Herzog was third-team all-state and the team’s four top golfers from last year return.

“We are very optimistic about having a great season,” Seaver said. “We return almost everything from a team that finished (seventh) last year. I think you will see a lot of players score in the fourth spot this year. We have a great deal of balance.”

White River Valley

Coach: Sam Griffin (third year).

Last year: Zander Clark played in the VPA Division II sectional tournament.

Leagues: VPA Division III, Southern Vermont League.

Home course: Montague Golf Club, Randolph.

Returners: Seniors — Zander Clark, Wyatt Cadwell. Juniors — Andrew Vanesse, Ava Patch, Aubrey Mackenzie. Sophomores — Colin Lewis, Arden Riesterer.

Newcomers: Junior — Olivia Tuller.

Outlook: Coach Sam Griffin said he is continuing to try to build a program at White River Valley with more members and more qualifiers for the Division II sectionals.

“We’re looking to build on our progress from the last two years and ultimately have a number of players qualify for the D-II sectionals,” Griffin said about the boys team. “Ideally (Wyatt) Cadwell, (Zander) Clark, (Colin) Lewis and (Andrew) Vanesse will qualify for D-II sectionals. (Arden) Riesterer will continue to gain match experience.”

For the girls, Griffin expects continued improvement from Aubrey Mackenzie and Ava Patch after the progress they made last year.

“They will play in more matches this year and hopefully score well enough to advance to the state tournament,” Griffin said. “Olivia Tuller will gain experience (her first year playing competitive golf) and be ready to enter matches before the season ends.”

Windsor

Coach: Pat Allen (11th year).

Last year: Did not qualify for state tournament.

Leagues: VPA Division II, Southern Vermont League.

Home course: John P. Larkin Country Club, Windsor.

Returners: Seniors — Helen Ennis. Juniors — Eban Margolis.

Newcomers: Freshmen — Jake Smith, William Booth-Berkley, Nathaniel Pruden.

Outlook: Coach Pat Allen will look to Helen Ennis and Eban Margolis to bring their experience and help the freshmen, including Jake Smith, who has played competitive golf and could make an immediate impact.

“The team has a good amount of middle school golfers playing as well, so we are aiming to continue to improve our scores, as well as growing the number of middle school golfers to feed the high school team in the years to come,” Allen said.

Woodstock

Coach: Matthew Closter (third year).

Last year: Boys team was fifth in the VPA Division II state tournament.

Leagues: VPA Division II, Southern Vermont League.

Home course: Woodstock Country Club.

Returners: Senior — Andrew Steele. Juniors — Beck Welch, Kyler Eaton, Ian Coates, Max Carey. Sophomores -Timothy Moore.

Newcomers: Seniors — Reid Allegretti. Sophomores — Haakan Oates, Santino Bohren. Freshmen — Lucas Geller, Declan Roylance, Asa Crowley.

Outlook: Led by co-captains Andrew Steele and Beck Welch, the Wasps bring back a junior core that includes Kyler Easton, Ian Coates and Max Carey who, along with Welch, are coming off a successful summer building their skills and experience, coach Matthew Closter said.

Closter also hopes to see match time for newcomer Reid Allegretti and returning sophomore Timmy Moore.

“A talented group of young, new players also bringing depth to the group for future years and includes (freshmen) Lucas Geller, Declan Roylance, Asa Crowly and (sophomores) Haakan Oates and Santino Bohren,” Closter said. “The team qualified for the 2023 state tournament and look to make a return this October.”
