Upper Valley College Notes: How athletes fared on track, field & water

Here are some of the Upper Valley residents who played varsity college sports during the spring season:
Junior pitcher Braeden Falzarano (Lebanon) pitched the first 2⅔ innings of his Wesleyan University career after battling injuries. The left-hander allowed five hits and six runs, five of them earned. … Bowdoin (24-11) enjoyed the services of sophomore pitcher Sam Sacerdote (Norwich/Hanover), who made 14 appearances, including one start. He was 1-0 with a 3.33 ERA while striking out 19 foes and walking nine. … Western New England (22-20) received a career-best .370 average from senior outfielder Jack Loftus (Norwich/Hanover), who started all 39 games in which he played. Half of his hits were for extra bases, including 13 doubles and 10 home runs. His .719 slugging percentage was tops in the Conference of New England. … Senior first baseman Preston Hewett (Plainfield/Lebanon) served as a captain at St. Michael’s College (Vt.) despite playing in only nine career games, three of them this spring. He started once and had two hits this spring, when the Purple Knights were 8-29. … Bennett Hewett (Plainfield/Lebanon), a freshman first baseman at Clark University (Mass.), appeared in 17 games for the Cougars (25-14), drawing three walks and managing a pair of hits in five at-bats. He committed one error in 20 fielding chances. … Stetson (Fla.) University reached NCAA Division I regional play and was 41-22. Junior pitcher Brendan Walker (Woodsville/Kimball Union Academy) made two appearances totaling five innings while striking out seven batters and walking four before missing the rest of his season due to an arm injury. … Emory University (Ga.) was 28-16 and won two games in the NCAA Division III tournament, their first such appearance since 2017. Sophomore outfielder Mica McGinley-Smith (Hanover/KUA) started one of the five contests in which he played. … Framingham State freshman infielder Cam Bradford (Hartford) appeared in nine games and was hitless in 10 at-bats for the Rams (14-28). … Vermont State University-Lyndon was 12-22 with freshman outfielder Sean Dunton (Quechee/Hartford) starting nine of the 13 games in which he competed. He hit .136 with three RBIs. Junior teammate and infielder Ian Hedgepeth (Norwich/Hanover) played in four games, starting once.
Hannah Burdick (Lyme/Hanover) captained Bates and became the program’s 39th All-American. The senior, in the stroke seat, helped the Bobcats’ first varsity boat finish third in the grand final (6:41) and their program finished fourth out of eight NCAA Division III teams. It was the 16th time in the last 18 years that Bates has finished among the country’s top four Division III teams. … Earlier in the season, Bates finished fifth among 26 Division III outfits at the National Rowing Invitational. Competing in the fourth varsity boat’s fifth seat was junior Merrill Doherty (Hanover). … Northeastern University (Mass.) sophomore Hannah Boone (Norwich/Hanover) rowed in the fourth seat and helped the second varsity eight finish fifth out of six teams during the “C” final as the Huskies made their 11th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I national championship regatta. Northeastern was 19th out of 22 teams. Finishing 21st was Rhode Island, with sophomore Anna Kann (Lebanon) on the roster but sidelined by injury this spring. … Union College (N.Y.) finished seventh at the Liberty League championships varsity eight race. Senior Lena Nowell (Lebanon) rowed in the fourth seat as her boat finished in 8:27. … Tufts University (Mass.) won its second consecutive NCAA Division III national title. Senior Reilly Uiterwyk (Hanover) rowed in the first varsity boat’s third seat and her craft finished in 6:38. Stroking from the second varsity eight’s sixth seat was senior Sophia Brackett (Hanover), and that boat crossed in 6:47. The Jumbos also won their second consecutive Head of the Charles regatta and NESCAC championship and captured their third consecutive National Invitational Rowing championship trophy. During those last two titles, sophomore Lyra Bornholdt-Collins (Hanover) rowed in the fifth varsity eight’s fourth seat.
The Union College men’s varsity eight boat finished fourth with sophomore Angus Hall (Lebanon) in the second seat for a 7:03 performance. … Fairfield University’s varsity eight finished second during the third final in 6:18 at the Dad Vail Regatta in New Jersey with sophomore Ean Ray (Grantham/Lebanon) aboard for the Connecticut school. … Williams College (Mass.) finished third among NCAA Division III teams at the IRA National Championship. Senior Noah Phipps (Norwich/Hanover) occupied the seventh seat in the first varsity eight, which finished fourth during its race in 5:47.
Senior midfielder Hill Carter (Hanover/KUA) posted 12 goals and three assists while playing in 14 games and starting seven times for Kenyon (Ohio) College (10-6). .… Vassar (6-9) received 13 goals and two assists from junior attackman Baker Morton (West Hartford), who appeared in every game. … Oberlin College (Ohio) was 11-5 with junior midfielder Dylan Hendrick (Lyme/Hanover) appearing in 12 games. … Scoring once and assisting seven times during the 13 games in which he appeared for Connecticut College (7-8) was Camels senior midfielder Colter Lingelbach-Pierce (Etna/KUA). … Freshman midfielder Bryce Soboleski (Hartford) appeared in six games for Massachusetts’ Nichols College (3-14). … Sophomore defenseman Connor Tierney (White River Junction/Hartford) started 10 of the 11 games in which he played for Massachusetts’ Bentley University (8-7)… The University of Hartford (Conn.) was 10-7 with sophomore midfielder Tarin Prior (Hartford) appearing in every game and scooping up 33 ground balls. … Freshman defenseman Brendan Logan (Norwich/Hanover) played in six games and picked up three ground balls for Middlebury (9-9). … York College (Pa.) claimed its fourth consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference title and won two NCAA Division III tournament games. The Spartans (17-4) received four goals from freshman midfielder Brady Watts (KUA), who also won 63% of the more than 200 face-offs he took. Teammate and sophomore attackman Colby Berard (KUA) played in every game, starting 17 of them, and produced 23 goals and nine assists. … Assumption University (Mass.) was 10-4. Junior defender Declan Turner (KUA) started every game. Junior midfielder Anders Rantilla (KUA) appeared in one contest. … Freshman goaltender Aiden Kelly (KUA) played in three games for Dean College (Mass.), allowing five goals in 15 minutes. … Freshman long-stick midfielder Henry Trimpi (Pomfret/KUA) scored once while playing nine games for Endicott College (Mass.). The Gulls were 15-4 and won the Conference of New England. … Jimmy Van Metre (KUA), a junior goaltender at Colorado College, appeared in four games for a total of 55 minutes and posted a .571 save percentage. … Emerson was 2-12 with senior attackman Benson Offit (KUA) starting every game while scoring 29 times and assisting twice. … Senior long-stick midfielder Anthony Freesolone (KUA) produced six goals and two assists for Ohio Wesleyan University, which won the North Coast Athletic Conference and finished 15-4. … Rhodes College (Tenn.) was 14-5 and won the Southern Athletic Association title. Reed Douseciez (KUA), a senior midfielder, appeared in seven games. … Air Force was 9-8 and senior attackman Ethan Howell (KUA) appeared in three games for the Falcons and coach Tom Wilson, who coached at Dartmouth from 2003-09. … Junior midfielder Keaton Piconi (Woodstock) appeared in 13 games for St. John Fisher University (N.Y.), putting up four goals and three assists. The Cardinals (16-5) won the Empire 8 Conference. Also with SJF were freshman defender Owen Kross (Woodstock), who appeared in nine games, and freshman defensive midfielder Sam Hambsch (Barnard/Woodstock), who got into seven contests and posted a goal and an assist. … Lake Forest College (Ill.) was 10-8. Freshman defensive midfielder Mateo Trimble (Norwich/Hanover) played four times.
Middlebury (21-1) won its 11th NCAA Division III title and its fourth in a row. Junior Caroline Adams (Norwich/Hanover), a midfielder and attacker, played in every game and started 21 times. Her 67 points (48 goals, 19 assists) were third on the team and she topped the Panthers with 128 draw controls. Freshman Maeve Lee (Hanover) appeared in 18 games, started once and produced eight goals and an assist. … Sophomore Ella Perreault (Chelsea/White River Valley), a defender and midfielder for Bard College (N.Y.), has started every game of her college career with the Raptors, who were 2-15 last spring and 1-16 this season. She had a goal and two assists this spring. … Franklin & Marshall College (Pa.) won its third consecutive Centennial Conference championship with freshman midfielder Svia Russman-Araya (Meriden/KUA) appearing in 17 games, scoring once and assisting seven times. … Suffolk University (Mass.) was 7-10 with freshman defender Gracie Laperle (Woodstock) starting 14 of the 15 games in which she played and causing 18 turnovers. … Freshman midfielder Claudia Shoemaker (Woodstock) scored thrice while appearing in 12 games for Wheaton College (Mass.), which finished 8-9. Classmate and teammate Lexi Feldman (Etna/Hanover), an attacker, got into three contests … St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) enjoyed the services of junior midfielder Caroline Hamilton (Hartford), who started 10 times, appeared in 17 games and produced 14 goals and five assists.
Lasell University (Mass.) was 10-24. Sophomore outfielder Marina Grassi (Hartford) appeared in three games. Junior utility player Emma Tarleton (Woodstock) got into 21 games and had a .273 batting average. …. Northern Vermont-Lyndon was 6-25. Senior infielder and outfielder Blake Southworth (Bethel/White River Valley) started every game and batted .258. She committed 13 errors. … Sophomore utility player Misora Hashiramoto (KUA) started 17 of the 20 contests in which she appeared for Bates, batting .244. … Freshman utility player Lulu Leppard (KUA) earned second team All-New England Small College Athletic Conference honors at Amherst College (Mass.), batting .345 while starting every game. She had 20 RBIs… Tanya Sanchez (Newport), a freshman pitcher at the University of Bridgeport (Conn.), made nine appearances in the circle. She was 2-0 in four starts and struck out 11 batters while walking 16. The righthander had a 3.64 ERA and committed four wild pitches for the Purple Knights (33-16).
Plymouth State finished sixth out of nine teams at the Little East Conference championships. Sophomore Nicholas Lamontagne (Lebanon) finished eighth in the 400 hurdles in 1:00. … University of Wisconsin junior Pierce Seigne (Norwich/Hanover) ran in two meets this spring, his best performance a 3:49 time during the 1,500, roughly seven seconds slower than his career best in that event. … St. Lawrence was fourth out of eight teams at the Liberty League championships. Saints junior Jack Simack (Sharon/White River Valley) was 13th in the javelin at 148 feet, 5 inches.

The double major in biology and equine-assisted psychotherapy set a school record with the throw… Plymouth State senior Kylie Taylor (Orford/Rivendell) finished ninth in the hammer throw at the New England Division III championships with a launch of 144 feet, 2 inches.
