Police identify victim, alleged shooter in Tunbridge incident

WEST LEBANON — A 33-year-old man remains hospitalized but is expected to survive after being shot with a rifle in Tunbridge on Wednesday morning, according to Vermont State Police.

On Friday afternoon, authorities identified the shooting victim as Hugh Shackleton, of Woodstock, who is being treated for “multiple injuries to his lower extremities” at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

Police also identified the alleged gunman: Justin Duddie, 21, of Tunbridge.

Duddie is not in custody and the investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to State Police.

The shooting took place at a residence at 128 Button Hill Road in Tunbridge. Police and paramedics responded to a call just after 6 a.m. Wednesday and treated the victim for what were described as life-threatening injuries.

Investigators interviewed Duddie at the residence the morning of the shooting and there was no threat to the general public, according to an earlier statement from State Police.

Duddie is a 2020 graduate of White River Valley High School, according to a listing in the Valley News.

Shackleton is a finish carpenter who builds and designs furniture for his parents, Charles and Miranda Shackleton, at ShackletonThomas furniture in Bridgewater, according to the company’s website.

On Thursday, a neighbor said the property where the shooting occurred is occupied by renters but she did not know them. The owner of the property did not respond to a request for comment.

State Police said anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the VSP barracks in Royalton at 802-234-9933 or provide an anonymous tip online at https://vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.

This is the second shooting incident in the Upper Valley in as many months.

Zachary Geissler pleaded not guilty on Nov. 22 to attempted murder in the 2nd degree, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. According to police, Geissler shot a longtime friend during a cocaine-fueled argument at an apartment in Hartford Village on Nov. 17.
