Boston — Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 40 shots for his first NHL victory, Blake Coleman scored twice and the New Jersey Devils beat the Boston Bruins, 5-2, on Thursday night.

Damon Severson scored 25 seconds into the game and Kyle Palmieri added his team-high 19th goal for the Devils, who won on the road for just the fourth time this season.

Nico Hirschier had a goal and an assist and Andy Greene had a pair of assists as New Jersey got its first win in Boston in five years.

Patrice Bergeron and Chris Wagner scored for Boston, and Jaroslav Halak had 28 saves.

Severson’s early goal on a wrist shot from the right circle gave the rookie Blackwood a lead the Devils never relinquished.

Blackwood, who was making his second career start, stopped 18 of 19 shots in the second period to help stave off the Bruins.

Boston got its first goal with 4:53 left in the second on Wagner’s one-timer from the slot off a pass from John Moore, cutting New Jersey’s lead to 2-1.

Coleman got the two-goal lead back for the Devils after he blocked a slap shot by Torey Krug at the blue line and outraced Brandon Carlo to the rebound for a breakaway, getting Halak with a backhand 4:15 into the third.

Hischier scored 12:43 into the third and Coleman scored into an empty net with 46 seconds remaining.

The Devils went up 2-0 with 4:35 left in the first on a power-play goal by Palmieri, whose slap shot from the right point bounced off Halak and hit Carlo, then bounced back over Halak into the net.

Notes: Blackwood was playing in his fourth career game since being called up from AHL Binghamton on Dec. 17 after starter Cory Schneider went on injured reserve with an abdominal strain. … Boston captain Zdeno Chara returned after missing 19 games with an MCL injury in his left knee. … D Kevan Miller returned after 13 games with cartilage injury to his larnyx suffered Nov. 26 in Toronto. LW Jake DeBrusk had been out with a concussion and played for the first time since Dec. 6.

Capitals 3, Hurricanes 1

Washington — T.J. Oshie scored his 11th goal and John Carlson had an empty-netter as Washington won its third straight game.

Chandler Stephenson added his second goal in three games for the Capitals, winners of 15 of their last 18 games.

Braden Holtby stopped 28 shots for the Metropolitan Division leaders.

Penguins 5, Red Wings 2

Pittsburgh — Phil Kessel scored two power-play goals and Derick Brassard added two scores as Pittsburgh ran its winning streak to four games.

Patric Hornqvist scored his 13th of the season. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each finished with two assists. Crosby has registered points in nine of his last 11 home games and has 24 points in his last 18 games. Matt Murray stopped 27 shots for his fourth straight win since returning from a lower-body injury.

Blue Jackets 4Rangers 3 (ot)

New York — Pierre-Luc Dubois scored 31 seconds into overtime and the Blue Jackets beat New York for their fifth straight victory.

Dubois’ 14th goal came after Columbus tied the game with less than three minutes left in regulation.

Blue Jackets backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo made 19 saves for the win.

Lightning 6, Flyers 5 (ot)

Tampa, Fla. — Alex Killorn scored 18 seconds into overtime and the Lightning, after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period, extended their point streak to 13 games.

Steven Stamkos had two goals and two assists to help Tampa Bay go ahead 5-2 at the end of two periods.

Blues 4, Sabres 1

St. Louis — Robert Thomas had a goal and an assist and Jake Allen made 30 saves to lead St. Louis over Buffalo.

Jay Bouwmeester, Pat Maroon and Ryan O’Reilly scored for the Blues.

Canadiens Goalie Out

Montreal — Montreal goalie Carey Price will miss the Canadiens’ three-game trip because of a lower-body injury.

The Canadiens said on Thursday that Price will not travel to Florida. The Canadiens play the Panthers on Friday night, are at NHL-leading Tampa Bay on Saturday night, and at Dallas on Monday night.

Price is 15-10-4 with a 2.84 goals-against average in 30 games this season.

All-Star Captains Announced

New York — Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid and Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews will be two of the four team captains at the NHL All-Star weekend next month in San Jose.

McDavid (Pacific Division), Matthews (Atlantic), Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (Central) and Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin (Metropolitan) won fan votes to earn the captaincies and the first roster spots for the event, Jan. 25-26.

Matthews will make his third All-Star appearance and first as captain, while McDavid will captain the Pacific Division for the third time in as many appearances.

MacKinnon is heading to All-Star weekend for the third time, while Ovechkin makes his eighth appearance.

The rest of the All-Stars will be determined by the NHL’s hockey operations department.
