Mascoma senior Gunner Currier was second in the NHIAA Division III boys cross country state championship race at Derryfield Park in Manchesteer on Saturday, helping the Royals claim the school’s first state title.

The Royals were first among 27 teams with 74 points, followed by Mascenic with 111.

Currier finished the 5K in a time of 16 minutes, 52 seconds, just behind winner Elijah Bodanza of Hillsboro-Deering (16:41). Mascoma’s Carl Russell was 11th (18:27) in the field of 189 runners, with teammates Brody Albanese 20th (18:59), Karson Rogers 21st (19:06) and Trevor Maheu 29th (19:31) to complete the scoring for Mascoma.

“The boys finished off a simply incredible season, from start to finish, making school history with Mascoma’s first ever state cross country championship,” Mascoma coach Rick Currier said. “I couldn’t be more proud of what this group has accomplished and everything they’ve done to work towards this moment.”

Though the girls did not have enough runners for a team score, Currier said they ran well.

For Mascoma, Joanna Behle was 46th in the field of 144 runners, with Emma Colburn 52nd and Isabella Currier 100th.

“All three of the girls exceeded expectations today as well,” he said. “Really peaking at the right time and adding to an amazing day.”

Newport’s top finisher for the boys was Bryce Palmer (37th, 19:58). The Tigers took 16th as a team.
