FAIR HAVEN, Vt. — The fifth-seeded Woodstock girls soccer team saw its postseason run come to an end with a 3-1 loss at top-seeded Fair Haven on Tuesday afternoon in the VPA Division III semifinals.

The Slaters (15-1-0) got things started with an Elizabeth Love goal in the first minute of action. The Wasps (11-6-0) battled back and played the duration of the first half even with the hosts to trail, 1-0, at the break.

Fair Haven scored another in the 70th minute to increase the lead to 2-0. Izzy Konijnenberg got one behind the Slaters’ keeper soon after but it was ruled the entire ball did not cross the goal line, leaving the hosts in front by two. Chloe Masillo followed that up with a high, driving goal to bring Woodstock back within one. The Slaters then took advantage of a pressing Wasps’ attack to score an insurance goal in the final minutes.

Woodstock had won four straight before this one, including a 2-1 win over White River Valley in the quarterfinals on Oct. 28. The Wasps will graduate Konijnenberg, Violet Tuckerman, River Miles and Dillon Moss.

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — The No. 4 seed Yellowjackets lost a heartbreaker against top-seeded Montpelier in an overtime thriller in the VPA Division III semifinals.

Windsor (7-9-0) trailed 2-1 at halftime and scored the game’s only second-half goal to knot things up at 2-2. Montpelier’s Regan Walke scored the game-winner in overtime.

Piper Vivian and Hannah Tenney each scored for Windsor. Goalie Sydney Perry was “amazing” while anchoring the Windsor defense according to coach Blake Wardwell, finishing with 15 saves.

The Yellowjackets won the previous three D-III state championships and will have to settle for a berth in the semis during this rebuilding season under first-year coach Wardwell. Windsor graduates just one player, Alexa Peckinpaugh, and should be primed for another good season a year from now.
