SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Keaton Piconi was a one-man wrecking crew for the Woodstock High boys lacrosse team on Saturday, scoring eight goals and adding two assists as the Wasps (1-0) opened their season with a 16-10 victory over Mount Mansfield at South Burlington High School.

The senior attacker helped stake his team to an 11-2 halftime lead, and Woodstock cruised from there.

Senior midfielder Corey White chipped in with four goals for the Wasps, and fellow senior midfielder Colby Eaton had two goals and two assists.

Juniors Will Coates and Griffin Piconi — Keaton’s younger brother — each scored once.

In goal, senior Ryan Rumleth made three saves.

“I thought we played well,” Woodstock head coach Brandon Little said. “We still have some players on injured reserve, so all things considered, I am happy with the win.”

It was an ideal start for the Wasps, the smallest school to play Division I lacrosse in Vermont. In last year’s playoffs, No. 2 seed Woodstock blew out Mt. Mansfield, 19-4, in the quarterfinals, then dropped a one-goal decision to Burr & Burton in the semifinals.

The Wasps will have a chance to avenge that loss when they host BBA on Thursday afternoon.
