Local roundup: Hanover boys win NHIAA Nordic skiing state championship

PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. — With three skiers in the top five of the freestyle race and three finishes in the top seven of the classic race, the Hanover High boys won the NHIAA Division I Nordic skiing championship at Great Glen Trails on Thursday.

The Hanover girls edged Keene by one point for second place in their meet.

In the 4K freestyle race, Hanover’s Adam Gilbert-Diamond was second (13:28.2), Taj Bagnato fourth (13:52.6)) and Luke Holmes fifth (13:55.6). Holmes was fifth in the 4K classic race (13:51.5), Gilbert-Diamond sixth (13:56.8) and Bagnato seventh (14:04.5).

The Bears’ Will Parker was 19th in the freestyle (15:52.1) and 10th in the classic (14:56.3). Also skiing for Hanover were Nicholas Van CIitters (21st freestyle, 16:08.4; 13th classic, 15:38.8) and Lachian McCann, who was 25th in the freestyle at 16:28.2 and 28th in the classic (17:14.0).

Hanover swept both races, taking the freestyle with 375 points and the classic with 376 points for a combined 751. Bow was second with 739 points, and Keene third with 719.

For the girls, Hanover edged Keene for second place, 722-721, by scoring 365 points in freestyle (second place) and 357 in classic (third place). Keene’s scores were 360 and 361. Kennett claimed the state title.

Katie Davis led Hanover with a fourth place in freestyle (16:07.8) and sixth in classic (15:47.0). Margaret Frost was 12th in classic (16:29.1), Heidi Davis 14th (16:42.7), Charlotte Tagupa 15th (16:45.0), Mia Bagnato 18th (17:01.3) and Elsa May 20th (17:05.4).

In the freestyle, Gwyneth Munroe was ninth for Hanover (16:47.1), May 10th (16:54.4), Heidi Davis 16th (17:09,8), Bagnato 17th (17:10.7) and Lyra Bornholdt-Collins 24th (18:27.7).

There were 55 finishers for both boys and girls.

Boys team results: Hanover 751, Bow 739, Keene 719, Winnacunnet 692, ConVal 634 Concord 621, Bedford 603, Souhegan 573, Manchester Central 524, Kingswood 399, Kennett 185.

Lebanon teams finish on podium

PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. — The Raiders had an impressive showing at Wednesday’s NHIAA Division II Nordic skiing championship meet, with the boys finishing second overall while the girls claimed third.

Daniel Mladek paced the Lebanon boys in both the freestyle and classic races at Great Glen Trails. Mladek took fifth in classic in 12 minutes, 37.5 seconds. Mladek added a sixth-place showing in freestyle (11:11.9). Sam Shipman was seventh in freestyle (11:16.0) and ninth in classic (13:05.1).

Seth Carl added a sixth-place finish in classic for the Raiders in 12:59.9 and was 13th overall in freestyle (11:55.6). Micah Achmoody took 13th in the classic in 13:27.0, while teammate John Bieszczad was 14th in freestyle in 12:04.7. The Lebanon boys finished second with 735 points, just 10 behind first-place Gilford.

Anna Illsley had the top finish for the third-place girls, taking sixth in classic in 14:58.7. Illsley added a 12th-place finish in freestyle in 13:43.2. Maya Barnett had another top-10 finish for the Raiders, taking ninth in freestyle in 13:26.8. Zoe Chinn was 11th in classic (15.29.8) and 15th in freestyle (13:55.7). Sophia Mladek took 17th in classic in 16:21.0, and Sophie Longacre was 18th in freestyle (14:07.5).

Boys team scores (top five): Gilford 745, Lebanon 735, Fall Mountain 734, Kearsarge 681, Hopkinton 653.

Girls team scores (top five): Hopkinton 766, Plymouth 727, Lebanon 716, Kearsarge 684, Gilford 670.
