CASTLETON, Vt. — White River Junction Post 84 did a lot with a little, riding a complete-game one-hitter from Alex Bushway for a 9-1 Vermont American Legion baseball win over Lakes Region on Wednesday at Castleton University despite dressing only 10 players for the contest.
Bushway surrendered a leadoff double in the home half of the first inning and dominated from there. The Hartford High pitcher struck out seven, walked three and didn’t allow another hit the rest of the way in a 97-pitch outing.
He already had a two-run cushion when Lakes Region (1-6) came to the plate. Nick Martin singled with one away, scoring on a Jacob Dwinell double. Dwinell made it 2-0 on a Lakes Region error and passed ball.
The hosts halved the deficit in their half of the first, but WRJ (2-2 league, 3-2 overall) pulled away from there. Bushway drove in a run in the third as Post 84 extended its lead to 4-1. Jacob Barry (bunt) and Martin (fly ball to center) contributed to a three-run fourth with RBI sacrifices. Nate O’Donnell and Dan Bushway completed the scoring by driving in runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
Dwinell, O’Donnell and Alex Bushway each had two hits for WRJ. The visitors also made the most of seven walks and four hit batsmen courtesy of off-target Lakes Region pitching.
Post 84 is scheduled to visit Bellows Falls Post 37 for a doubleheader on Saturday.
