Local roundup: Hanover, Woodstock win ski titles

GILFORD, N.H. — The Hanover High boys nordic ski team claimed seven different top-10 finishes to edge Kennett and claim the NHIAA state championship.
Noah Phipps had the high finish of the day for the Marauders, taking third in the freestyle race in 12 minutes, 57.1 seconds. Phipps added a sixth place finish in the classic (15:17.9). Glen Passow was fourth in both events, clocking in at 13:01.2 in freestyle and 14:53.9 in classic. Aidan Biglow was fifth in classic (14:53.9) and sixth in freestyle (13:18.0). Tag Bagnato was 11th in freestyle and Peter Burnham was 14th in classic to round out the Hanover scoring runs.
The Hanover girls took second behind Kennett. Margot Davis had the best all-around day for the Marauders, finishing fifth in the freestyle (16:40.3) and sixth in classic (19:03.1). Megan Smith was third for the Marauders in freestyle (16:07.6). Shannon Walsh was ninth in freestyle (16:49.0) and 12th in classic. Kate Davis added a 16th place finish in freestyle for Hanover.
Lebanon finished third overall in the boys and girls races.
Zoe Chinn was third in the classic for Raiders girls in 19:01.4. Brianna DeBanico was fourth in freestyle (16:23.9) and ninth in classic (19:01.4). Allison Carl scored in each race, finishing 13th in freestyle and 13th again in classic. Celia Barnett (10th) and Maria Goodwin (11th) also had scoring races in freestyle. Ana Goodwin added a 14th place finish in classic.
Cooper Bourne led the Lebanon boys, taking seventh in freestyle (13:26.1) and 11th in classic (16:01.1). Jack Smyrski was eighth in classic (15:24.0) and 13th in freestyle. Nate Magari was 17th in classic and 18th in freestyle. Taylor Boardman added a 16th place finish in classic and was 19th in freestyle.

EAST BURKE, Vt. — The Wasps closed day two of the VPA Alpine ski meet with a strong performance in the slalom to win the girls state championship.
Kelly Gebhardt finished second overall in the slalom for Woodstock with a combined time of 1:27.29. Teammate Taylor Blodorn was 13th in 1:41.23, followed by Alice Sperber in 14th (1:41.71). Chloe Noble had the final Woodstock scoring run in 18th (1:42.97).
Carl Gebhardt led the Woodstock boys, who finished ninth overall, in 23rd (1:35.95). Peter Borden was 30th, Orion Beardsley was 49th and Aidan McDermott was 55th.
The Thetford boys had Hugh O’Donnell in 57th and Alex Holzer in 59th.

MANCHESTER, Vt. — The No. 8 seed Wasps hit the road and dominated the No. 1 seed Bulldogs in the VPA Division II quarterfinals.
Faye Stevens had a hat trick for Woodstock. Lizzy Peck scored the other two goals. Woodstock led, 3-0, throw two periods before adding a pair to close out the win. Goalie Bridgit Black made 17 saves for the Wasps.
“Beginning to end, it was one of those games you can be proud of as a coach,” Woodstock coach Ian Coates said. “It’s an example of all those things you preach all throughout the latter half of the season. They executed the game plan and it was a wonderful game to watch.
Kendyl Boisvert and Allie Cimis each had a pair of assists. Sami Yates and Sophie Yates also had assists. The Wasps featured strong puck movement on the Olympic-sized ice at Riley Rink, a venue that has not been kind to Woodstock in the past.
“We haven’t had a ton of success in this rink previously,” Coates said. “This is the first time I’ve brought a team here and not once did you think they were playing the big sheet because the players were moving and using the neutral zone. The fact is, our girls are in really good shape and can handle the big ice.”
Woodstock (7-12-3) will face Harwood in the semifinals on Friday or Saturday at a site to be determined.
WELLS RIVER, Vt. — The No. 11 seed Raptors went on the road and closed out the No. 6 seed Bucks with a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter of the VPA Division IV first round.
“Our guys played with an extreme amount of energy. All game long, we gave great effort,” Rivendell coach Ross Convertino said. “It was a tremendous defensive effort. We forced them to take tough shots. They tried to press and we were able to beat the press with smart ball movement to get a lot of points in transition.”
Freshman Kyle Carter had 15 points to pace the Raptors (8-13), who have now won eight of their last 14 games following an 0-7 start to the season. Zach Gould and Isaac Martel each added 10 points.
Rivendell will visit No. 3 seed Twin Valley on Friday night in the quarterfinals; the two teams did not play during the regular season.
WINDSOR — The Yellowjackets (13-8) outlasted the Spartans in a high-scoring battle in the first round of the VPA Division III playoffs.
“They wouldn’t go away. We’d get up by 16-18 points, then they’d throw up a few shots that would go in,” Windsor coach Harry Ladue said.
Robert Slocum made four 3-pointers on his way to 27 points for the Jacks. Owen Abrahamsen added 22 points. Dakohta Sanderson chipped in 12 points and Hunter Grela had 10. Windsor led, 38-30, at halftime and then built a 16-point lead heading into the fourth.
Windsor will visit Peoples for the quarterfinals on Friday night.
MILTON, Vt. — The Wasps (8-13) saw their season come to an end in the first round of the VPA Division II playoffs.
Gabe Marsicovetere had a game-high 26 points for Woodstock. Harrison Morse added seven points. The Wasps led, 13-8, after the first quarter but were outscored, 36-18, over the next 16 minutes.
Woodstock will lose Marsicovetere, Harrison Nunes, Will Crompton, Charlie Amato, Anthony Hendrich, Emilio Montano, Micah Schlabach and Caden White to graduation.
WILMINGTON, Vt. — The No. 14 seed Eagles lost in the first round of the VPA Division IV playoffs at the No. 3 seed Wildcats. MVCS finishes at 5-16 and will graduate Josh King and Daniel Roberts.
LEBANON — The rosters for the 66th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl were announced for the upcoming game on Aug. 3, at Spartan Stadium at Castleton University.
Six area athletes were named to the teams. Hanover’s Simon Roach and Newport’s Gavin Lovely will each play on the New Hampshire team. Woodstock will send both Caden White and Gabe Marsicovetere to the Vermont team. Gavin Harriman of Windsor and Nick Porter from Hartford will also suit up for the Green Mountain squad.
Marty Richards, of Mount Mansfield Union High, will coach the Vermont team. Windham High’s Bill Raycraft will lead the New Hampshire team.
BEDFORD, N.H. — The 12th annual CHaD Battle of the Badges hockey championship will be played on March 16 at SNHU Arena in Manchester at 5 p.m.
Players must commit to raising at least $1,500 each to be on the roster for this police vs. fire matchup. Team Fire includes two players with local ties; Jeff Clattenburg of the Lebanon Fire Department and Christian Henault of the Hartford Fire Department.
HANOVER — Cory Highfield scored four goals and Ryan Morrison added three more as UMass Lowell (2-2) defeated Dartmouth (1-3) in the Big Green’s home opener.
Matt Paul led Dartmouth with four goals, while Harlan Smart scored twice and George Prince and Ben Martin added one goal and two assists apiece for the Big Green, which trailed at the half, 4-2.
Daniel Hincks (10 saves) and George Christopher (one) were in goal for Dartmouth, which hosts Binghamton on Saturday.
