Local Roundup: Spanos Propels Dartmouth Field Hockey

Lowell, Mass. — Katie Spanos’ team-leading seventh goal of the season, scored in the 66th minute of play, gave the Dartmouth College field hockey team a 2-1 nonconference win over UMass Lowell on Sunday at Wicked Blue Field.

The Big Green (6-8) fell behind, 1-0, early in the second half, but tallies from Katie Persin and Spanos produced a comeback for the team’s second win of the weekend.

The River Hawks’ Katie Lynn scored off a corner play in the 43rd minute to put the home team up. The lead didn’t last long, as Persin scored her fourth of the season for Dartmouth just 6½ minutes later. Freshman Cecelia Monnin picked up the lone assist on the goal. Jocelyn Wulf earned the assist on Spanos’ goal, with her initial shot being redirected from the post and into the cage for the go-ahead marker.

Senior Hailey Valerio picked up the win in goal, stopping four shots and was tested late on several occasions. Dartmouth next hosts Harvard for a homecoming contest on Saturday.

Dartmouth Busy at Head of Charles

Cambridge, Mass. — Five Dartmouth crews took to the water for the final day of the Head of the Charles regatta.

The Big Green heavyweights took fifth place in the championship fours and 19th in the championship eights. Avery Salumbides coxes a quartet that had the best placement by a Dartmouth crew on the day, clocking a time of 17 minutes, 47.6 seconds.

Dartmouth’s lightweights were eighth in the eights and 11th in the fours, and the women’s eight rowed to a 20th-place finish.

Dartmouth Ends Invite

Hanover — Gilbert Jaeger won his flight to highlight the Big Green’s final day at its Dartmouth Invitational at the Boss Center.

Jaeger won the B1 flight, taking a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Buffalo’s Matt Johnson for the Big Green’s sole flight win. Sid Chari and Casey Ross were both victorius in A1 flight consolation matches, John Speicher won his A2 consolation contest and Roko Glanovic fell in three sets in the same flight. Freshman Sacha Pritzker was victorious in the C consolation when his opponent from Boston University retired.

Green Seventh in S.C.

Camden, s.c. — Sophomore Jason Liu shot a 1-over-par 71 on Sunday to leave Dartmouth tied for seventh to close the Camden Collegiate Invitational.

The Big Green shot a 47-over 887 as a team over the three-day tournament. USC Upstate vaulted two teams, including host Furman, to take home the team title at 859. on the par-70, 6,455-yard course at the Camden Country Club.

Liu had the top individual finish for the Big Green, tying for 13th.
