Haverhill, Mass. — If making the United States Golf Association Women’s Senior Amateur is a test, Betsy Knights aced it on Thursday. Literally.

Barely a day removed from a top-15 run at the New Hampshire Women’s Golf Association amateur championship at the Eastman Golf Links, Knights earned a spot in the U.S. Women’s Senior Am thanks to her play at a qualifier at Haverhill (Mass.) Country Club. Knights, an Orford resident and Hanover Country Club member, shot a 9-over-par 79 — highlighted by a hole-in-one — to finish sixth out of nine women who advanced to the U.S. Women’s Senior Am next month in Oregon.

Knights already has a spot on the three-player New Hampshire roster for the USGA Women’s State Team event in New Mexico in late September.

The Senior Am will be Knights’ first, while that and the State Team tournament will make it three USGA events for her altogether.

The ace, on Haverhill’s 155-yard, par-3 seventh hole, turned around what could have been an unsuccessful day. Knights double-bogeyed her second hole and bogeyed her third, and the hole-in-one came as a complete shock.

“I hit a 4-hybrid; didn’t see it go in,” Knights said in a Facebook message on Thursday night. “Walked up and was like, ‘Whaaattt?’ Playing competition said, ‘Bet it’s in the hole.’ “I said, ‘No way.’ There it was.

“Threw me off in the back (nine). Started thinking, ‘I might qualify?’ ”

She did by keeping lost shots to a minimum after the turn. After pars on 8 and 9, Knights recorded bogeys on six of the back nine holes as well as a double-bogey on 17, but she still made the cut for the national championship by two strokes.

North Hampton, N.H.’s Dana Harrity, the runner-up at this week’s NHWGA Amateur, also made the U.S. Senior Women’s Am field out of the Haverhill qualifier, tying for seventh at 10-over 80. Knights shot 85-84-84—253 to finish 13th at the NHWGA Am at Eastman this week.

The U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur will take place at Waverly Country Club in Portland, Ore., on Sept. 9-14. The U.S. Women’s State Team tournament is set for Sept. 26-28 at the Club at Las Campanas in Sante Fe, N.M.; Knights’ teammates there will include Claremont’s Paige MacLeay and Derryfield’s Tara Watt.
