The red wave that wasn’t

What has happened to the once Party of Lincoln? Here’s one quotation from our 16th president.

“If you once forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem. It is true that you may fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all the time; but you cant fool all the people all the time.”

Of course, mere fooling here and there is one thing; steady lying is another. Perhaps it is more than best that our 44th moves on and takes his MAGA wing with him. He might go back to “The Apprentice” and dwell upon his closing remarks from the show, “You’re fired.”

Even more fitting, a tight one at that in his golf duds, with now a MUGA hat. He might toss his hat into the ring as host of “The Biggest Loser.”

Thanks to all who supported hunger walk

Four local churches and 36 participants raised just over $6,000 for the Newport Area Crop Hunger Walk held in October.

It was a strong return to this yearly event, after two years of not being able to gather and walk as a group due to COVID-19.

Proceeds from the event go to the Newport Food Pantry and local and global hunger-relief around the world. Church World Service is on the ground responding to world-wide hunger-related disaster relief and refugee resettlement, as well as food insecurity in local communities throughout the United States.

This year’s event reminded us all of the positive ripple effects when a small group of people come together for a common cause.

Thank you to all who supported this important community event.

Ukraine fight is a necessary one

In response to Neil Meliment’s Forum letter of Nov. 12: “US can’t win Ukraine war”

I am anti-war too, and also agree — it’s an idiotic way to settle anything. I know that this administration represents the United States of America because it has been elected by the citizens of this country, and it represents in a major way the democracy of the free world.

Russia’s Putin, a former KGB agent, has started the occupation of a democratic country with brutal military force, disguised as a Special Military Operation. Should we just stand by and let him get away with it?

In my opinion, NATO should have reacted earlier when Russia started military interventions in Chechnya, Moldova and occupied Crimea. Putin was obviously ill advised by his brown-nosing cronies who told him that Ukrainians will welcome Russian soldiers with flowers.

Having lived under Soviet rule for 40 years of my life, I appreciate being informed by CNN, PBS, BBC, FRANCE-24 and DW, rather than by TASS and RT. I know in my heart how Ukranians feel about Putin’s Russia occupying their country, killing civilians and moving Ukrainian children to Russia, away from their parents.

I also feel sorry for every Russian soldier who died in this unjust war, and for the mothers who lost their sons.
