Adrienne Shibles has stepped down from her post as Dartmouth College women’s basketball head coach after just two seasons, compiling a 5-49 overall record and a 2-26 mark in Ivy League play.

The Big Green finished the 2022-23 season on a 19-game losing streak, going winless against Ancient Eight foes. Their five leading scorers are all slated to return, with sophomore guard Victoria Page the only player to average at least 10 points per game. As a team, Dartmouth averaged just 53.7 points per contest, which ranked 333rd out of 350 NCAA Division I squads.

Shibles came to Hanover after 13 years at Bowdoin College, where she had a winning percentage above .800, reached 11 NCAA Division III Tournaments and two Final Fours. None of her three assistant coaches this past season had Division I playing or coaching experience prior to arriving at Dartmouth.

Prior to Bowdoin, Shibles had been the head coach at Swarthmore for nine years, leaving as the winningest coach in the history of that program. She played her college ball at Bates College, where she was a two-time captain and a 1,000-point scorer.

The Big Green’s last winning season came in 2017-18, when they finished 15-12 under Belle Koclanes. Their last Ivy League title and NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2009 under Chris Wielgus, who in two stints as head coach led Dartmouth to all seven of its NCAA Tournament berths.

Shibles’ winning percentage of .102 is the lowest of any head coach in program history, and her two-year tenure is the shortest since Douglas Bates coached the Big Green in their inaugural season of 1972-73, which consisted of just four games.

A national search for Shibles’ successor will begin immediately, according to a Dartmouth news release. An athletic department spokesperson reported that Shibles left the program of her own accord.

SOFTBALL Dartmouth wins two of three at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Big Green swept Saturday’s doubleheader against host Brown and nearly pulled off the sweep with a win Sunday, but fell 6-5 on a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Rachel McCarroll tossed a complete-game shutout in Saturday’s opener, a 4-0 Big Green victory, and shortstop Kate Farren gave McCarroll all the support she would need with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and a solo shot in the sixth. Left fielder Alaana Panu delivered another run in the seventh with an RBI single.

The nightcap Saturday, which Dartmouth won 13-9, was much more eventful from an offensive standpoint. The Big Green took a 6-0 lead in the second inning on a three-run Kelly Beaupre home run in the first and a two-run triple in the second by Lauren Ben-Ezra, who later scored on a wild pitch. Farren’s two-run triple highlighted a three-run fourth, and a Beaupre sacrifice fly in the fifth made it a 10-1 game.

The Bears stormed back with five runs in their half of the fifth and tacked on three more over the last two innings, but Beaupre’s second three-run blast, which gave her seven RBIs in the game, gave Dartmouth some insurance in the seventh.

Izzy Kam went five innings in the circle, giving up four earned runs on seven hits. Stella Bale struggled in relief to open the sixth, so McCarroll came on and earned the save.

In Sunday’s finale, Brown took an early 3-0 lead on two home runs by Jasmine Hsiao, who later added a two-run double in the fifth. The Big Green rallied for five runs in the fourth to go in front, with Maria Angelino, Kelly Ohde, Ashley Frantz and Ben-Ezra all driving in runs. But Dartmouth was kept off the board from there, stranding two in scoring position in the seventh before the Bears won it in the bottom of the inning.

The Big Green (11-17, 6-6 Ivy League) are in fourth place in the Ivy League standings as they chase a spot in the four-team conference tournament. Dartmouth hosts Merrimack in a midweek game Wednesday, then travels to Yale for three this coming weekend.

BASEBALL Big Green swept by Yale, still winless in Ivy play

HANOVER — Dartmouth’s losing streak reached 20 games, an all-time program record, as the Bulldogs won all three this past weekend at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.

Saturday’s first game was close until Yale broke it wide open with 11 runs in the ninth inning to win 16-3. Kolton Freeman’s solo home run and Max Zajek’s two-run single accounted for Dartmouth’s scoring.

The Big Green were in position to even the series later Saturday, with a two-run lead after seven thanks to seven shutout innings by Trystan Sarcone.

The Bulldogs, though, cut the deficit to one in the eighth, tied it in the ninth and plated five runs in the 10th for a 7-2 win. The tying run came across on a throwing error with two outs.

In Sunday’s 1-0 Dartmouth loss, Yale’s only run came on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Devin Milberg had his best outing of the season, with five scoreless innings and just three hits allowed.

The Big Green (1-27, 0-12 Ivy League) travel to Siena on Wednesday, then head to Columbia for a three-game weekend series.

WOMEN’S TENNIS Big Green drop twoin New York State

Dartmouth remained winless in Ivy League play with a 4-0 loss at Columbia on Saturday and a 4-1 defeat at Cornell on Sunday.

The Big Green’s only team point of the weekend came from Ujvala Jupalli, who recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles against the Big Red.

Dartmouth (4-13, 0-5 Ivy League) concludes the regular season with home matches this coming weekend against Princeton and Penn.

MEN’S TENNIS Big Green fall to Lions, Big Red

HANOVER — Dartmouth took two points in a 5-2 loss Saturday to No. 11 Columbia, with Miles Groom winning in straight sets at No. 3 singles and Henry Ren winning a decisive third set at No. 2 singles.

Ren was victorious again Sunday against Cornell, taking a first-set tiebreak and winning the second set 6-2, but the Big Green came up short everywhere else.

Dartmouth (11-12, 1-4 Ivy League) travels to Princeton and Penn this weekend to close out the regular season.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Dartmouth 16, Columbia 8

NEW YORK — The Big Green were never threatened in Saturday’s win over the last-place Lions, scoring eight straight goals between the first and second quarters to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 10-3 lead.

Catherine Erb led Dartmouth with five goals and Katie Elders added four. Samantha Bennett and Katina Christensen each scored twice, and Maja Desmond, Isabella Godsick and Lucy Murray all tallied once. Murray also had three assists and Jenna Donohue and Bennett each had two.

The Big Green put 27 shots on goal to Columbia’s 12 and dominated in the draw control circle, 21-6.

Dartmouth (5-7, 2-3 Ivy League) travels to Vermont on Tuesday, then hosts Princeton for Senior Day on Saturday.

MEN’S LACROSSE Princeton 17, Dartmouth 7

HANOVER — The No. 20 Tigers rolled to a 7-1 halftime lead after conceding the game’s first goal, handing the Big Green their third straight loss.

Nate Davis had three goals for Dartmouth, Colin McGill added two, and Cameron Brown and Emmett Paradine each scored once.

Princeton had a 34-20 edge in shots on goal, though the Big Green won 14 face-offs to the Tigers’ 13.

Dartmouth (6-4, 1-3 Ivy League) is at Penn this coming Saturday.
