Hamden, Conn. — Dartmouth goalie Christine Honor made 61 saves as the Big Green women’s hockey team defeated Quinnipiac, 1-0, for its first win of the season and first victory over the Bobcats since Jan. 11, 2013.
Honor’s total set an NCAA record for most saves in a shutout, which was held by Union’s Shanae Lundberg since Dec. 2, 2014. This also was her first career shutout. Honor also set a career high and a program record.
Alyssa Baker scored late in the first period, while Hailey Noronha and Cecilia Lopez assisted.
“Everyone played great, which was led by an unbelievable performance by Christie in net,” Dartmouth interim head coach Joe Marsh said in a news release. “The kids just kept battling and stayed with it, even though Quinnipiac had puck possession most of the game. They kept working, the effort was great, the kids supported one another and I couldn’t ask for more.”
A Noronha drive with 10 seconds remaining on a first-period power play went wide, distracting Quinnipiac netminder Abbie Ives. While Ives was looking over her right shoulder, the puck rebounded to Baker, who fired into the empty left corner to give the Green a 1-0 advantage at 14:52 of the first.
The Bobcats almost evened the score on the power play early in the second. Melissa Samoskevich’s shot hit the left pipe, traveled behind Honor and exited the right side of the cage. The Big Green goalie had 25 saves in the frame for a total of 42 through two periods, which already beat her career high of 39 at Harvard last weekend.
Quinnipiac controlled the action in the third period, taking 11 shots in a row before Dartmouth got a stick on the puck. The Big Green managed to keep the attacking Bobcats at bay for the remainder of the game.
“We have to have that kind of work ethic,” Marsh said. “The work the girls put in is evident, and they really deserved this. We have had some moral victories, and moral victories are fine up to a point, but we need real ones, and tonight was just what the doctor ordered. I couldn’t be prouder. This is a good feeling. It’s great to see them so excited.”
Quinnipiac outshot Dartmouth, 61-16.
Dartmouth will be back in action against Princeton at 3 p.m. today. This will be the Big Green’s last road game until January.
