ITHACA, N.Y. — After dropping both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader at Cornell, the Dartmouth College softball team concluded the 2023 season with an extra-inning rally to top the Big Red on Sunday, 5-2.

The Big Green out-hit Cornell 5-4 in the series opener, but Lauren Holt drove in all three runs in the game as the Big Red claimed a 3-0 win despite a strong outing from sophomore right-hander Rachel McCarroll, who struck out nine, walked two and allowed four hits over six innings.

Cornell then scored five runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth in a 10-1, run-rule victory later Saturday, even as each team tallied nine hits. First-year Lauren Ben-Ezra was 3-for-3 and scored Dartmouth’s lone run on a single by sophomore outfielder Alaana Panu.

Dartmouth snapped a four-game skid and ended the season on a high Sunday, jumping out to a two-run lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Kate Farren and a bunt single by junior Kelly Beaupre. The Big Red evened the score with single runs in the second and third, and that’s where things remained until the eighth, when the Big Green put up three two-out runs to go back in front. After the go-ahead run scored on an error, Beaupre and senior third baseman Maria Angelino added key hits to drive in insurance runs.

McCarroll finished off the win with a three up, three down bottom of the inning, finishing with four hits and two walks allowed over eight frames. She concluded the season with a 2.99 ERA, throwing more than two-thirds of Dartmouth’s innings.

Seniors Farren and Angelino have played their final game for the Big Green, who finished 14-25 overall and 8-13 in Ivy League play, ahead of only Penn in the conference standings.

HANOVER — The Big Green were swept in Saturday’s doubleheader by the Big Red, but scratched out a 3-2 victory Sunday in their final home game and final Ivy League game of the season.

A two-run single by senior third baseman Connor Bertsch in the eighth inning gave Dartmouth its only runs in a 6-2 loss in the series opener. Junior left-hander Devin Milberg was solid on the mound, allowing three earned runs on four hits over six innings while walking two and striking out five.

The Big Green led early in Saturday’s second game, but Cornell banged out 14 hits in a 7-2 win. Sophomore catcher Zackarie Casebonne put Dartmouth ahead in the first with an RBI single, and after the Big Red tied it up with a solo home run in the third, Elliot Krewson brought home Tyler Robinson with a groundout in the bottom half. It was all Big Red after that, though, as Cornell took its first lead in the top of the fourth and never looked back.

Junior first baseman Max Zajec put the Big Green in front in the fourth inning of Sunday’s contest with a run-scoring double, and his grounder in the sixth led to a throwing error that gave Dartmouth a 2-1 lead. The Big Red pushed across the tying run in the seventh before Robinson’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning put the hosts ahead for good.

Junior right-hander Clark Gilmore gave up just two hits and one run in five strong innings, and senior Jack Metzger earned the win with four innings of relief, scattering six hits but also holding Cornell to just one run.

The Big Green (3-36, 2-19 Ivy League) wrap up the season with a doubleheader Saturday at Sacred Heart.
