College Notes: How Upper Valley athletes fared at the collegiate level

Williams (Mass.) College senior Noah Phipps (Norwich/Hanover) occupied the stroke seat for the Ephs’ first varsity boat, which finished seventh out of 42 teams at the Head of the Charles in a time of 14 minutes and 57 seconds in the collegiate eight race… Fairfield (Conn.) University finished 20th in 12:23 at Philadelphia’s Head of the Schuylkill, the Stags’ championship 8 race lineup including sophomore Ean Ray (Grantham/Lebanon)… Union (N.Y.) College’s men’s championship 4 boat was fifth out of 11 Division III Schuylkill entries in 14:00. Sophomore Angus Hall (Lebanon) rowed from the stroke seat. The Garnet Chargers’ club championship 8 boat was seventh out of 14 Division III craft in 12:49, sophomore Danny Bender (Norwich/Hanover) occupying the sixth seat… The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s third varsity boat finished 17th out of 26 teams at the Wormtown Chase regatta in Worcester, Mass. Sophomore Adam Gilbert-Diamond (Hanover) occupied the third seat as the Beavers crossed in 16:31.
Bates College in Maine had its second women’s varsity-eight boat finish 20th out of 34 NCAA Division III entrants at the Head of the Charles regatta in 18:17. Freshman Virginia Adams (Hanover) occupied the fifth seat in Boston. The Bobcats’ first boat was fifth in 17:33 over the 3-mile course, featuring senior captain Hannah Burdick (Lyme/Hanover) in the second seat… Wellesley (Mass.) College finished seventh at the Head of the Charles in 17:32 with junior Sage Gilbert-Diamond (Hanover) in the fifth seat… Tufts (Mass.) University’s top women’s boat finished first among 34 other Division III boats in winning the Head of the Charles. The defending national champions crossed in 17:03 to capture the Yaz Farooq Trophy. The Jumbos’ second boat finished ninth in 17:46 and was the top performer among second boats. Reilly Uiterwyk (Lyme/Hanover) was in the first boat’s sixth seat and senior Sophia Brackett (Hanover) was in the seventh seat for the second boat. Tufts sophomore Lyra Bornholdt-Collins (Hanover) appeared once in the third varsity eight’s sixth seat during the season. It finished 13th out of 33 teams in 18:06 at the Head of the Riverfront in Hartford, Conn., in early October… Finishing 33rd was Wellesley’s fourth varsity, featuring sophomore coxswain Anya Rendahl (Plainfield/Lebanon)… Britta Arnold (Norwich/Hanover) a Skidmore (N.Y.) College sophomore, was in the Thoroughbreds’ top boat when it finished fifth overall and second among NCAA Division II boats at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga, N.Y. in 12:01… Sophomore Anna Kann (Plainfield/Lebanon) rowed from the third seat for the University of Rhode Island’s second varsity boat this fall. The Rams finished seventh out of 33 boats in 17:47 in the Head of the River’s open division. URI’s first boat won that event on its home course… At the same event, Union’s top women’s boat was fifth out of 15 NCAA Division III teams in the club championship. Senior Lena Nowell (Lebanon), majoring in biomedical engineering and minoring in mathematics, competed in the fifth seat. The Garnet Chargers roster also features triplets Isabelle, Erika and Elizabeth Canaveral (West Lebanon/Lebanon), who rowed in the frosh/novice 8 boat at the Schuylkill event. It finished in 16:44, sixth out of nine Division III crews… Sophomore Hannah Boone (Norwich/Hanover) slotted into the second varsity’s boat’s sixth seat Northeastern (Mass.) University. Her boat finished 17th out of 26 teams in 15:30 at the Foot of the Charles… Sophomore Sophie Braver (Stafford/Kimball Union Academy) rowed in the second varsity boat for Wesleyan (Conn.) University. Her craft finished sixth out of 18 teams at the Wormtown Chase Regatta in Worcester, N.Y. to finish the season, crossing in 17:40, second out of six second varsity boats.
Keene State sophomore Griffin Urnezis (Meridan/Lebanon) ran a personal-best 25:59 on the 8K course at the Little East Conference championships, finishing fifth out of 86 entrants to help the Owls triumph for the first time in nine years… Georgetown (D.C.) University was third out of nine schools at the Big East Conference championships. Sophomore Birhanu Harriman (Lebanon) ran 25:54, finishing 19th out of 85 runners and therefore earning second team all-conference honors… Posting a personal best was Western New England junior John Bieszczad (Grantham/Lebanon), who ran 28:57.0 in mid-October. The Bears were eighth out of 10 teams at the Conference of New England championships a week later and Bieszczad ran 28:57.1 to finish 60th out of 119 competitors… Vermont was seventh out of eight teams at the America East Conference championships. Sophomore Tommy Wolfe (Grantham/Lebanon), ran 26:07 to place 60th among 84 participants. Wolfe produced a personal-best 25:40 earlier in the campaign… Colby (Maine) College freshman Will Parker (Hanover) established personal bests in the 6k distance (20:25) and 8k length (27:29). The Mules were eighth out of 11 teams at the New England Small College Athletic Conference championships… University of New England sophomore Liam Attwood (Windsor) ran a personal-best 33:29 and finished 108th out of 119 runners at the Commonwealth Coast Conference championships. The Nor’Easters finished eighth out of 10 teams… Vassar (N.Y.) College was second out of eight teams at the ECAC championships. Sophomore Sean Miller (Grantham/Lebanon) later finished 16th at the NCAA Division III Mideast Region meet in a personal-best 25:01… Pierce Seigne (Norwich/Hanover), a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin, was part of the Badgers’ victory at the 15-team Big 10 Conference championships. He was 101st out of 151 harriers in 24:24… Rensselaer (N.Y.) Polytechnic Institute bested 23 opponents to win the NCAA Division III Mideast Region title. Junior Tobin Durham (Corinth/Thetford Academy) finished seventh in 24:39.
Salve Regina (R.I.) University sophomore Isabella Hastings (Grantham/Lebanon) was the Seahawks’ top finisher at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships. Hastings finished 29th in 23:03 on the 6-kilometer course… Plymouth State senior Abby Snow (Grantham/Lebanon) ran a personal-best 20:44 on the 5k course at the Little East Conference championships, helping the Panthers finish fourth out of eight teams. Snow was 29th out of 80 harriers… VSU-Castleton’s six-competitor team finished eighth and last at the same meet. Junior Bethany Davis (White River Junction/Hartford) finished 22nd in a time of 20:10… Appalachian (N.C.) State was second at the Fire Tower Project meet in Boone, N.C., with senior Riley Roach (Hanover) finishing 65th out of 121 runners in 23:42… Bowdoin (Maine) College junior Charlotte Tagupa (Norwich/Hanover) posted a personal-best 24:25, finishing 137th out of 157 runners at the NESCAC championships. The Polar Bears finished ninth out of 11 teams… Bates was eighth at the same meet with sophomore Kayla Burnham (Hartland/Hartford) finishing 140th in 24:24 and Colby finished 10th with senior Bridget Meehan (Hanover) running 24:53 and finishing 146th out of 157 competitors… St. Michael’s was third at the 12-team Northeast 10 Conference championships. Freshman Rylee Burhnham (Hartland/Hartford) ran a personal-best 28:11 and finished 72nd out of 94 entrants … New Hampshire Technical Institute freshman Lilyanna Cloutier (Lebanon) finished 36th out of 60 runners in 31:40 during a meet at Hampshire (Mass.) College. Cloutier ran as an independent.
Skidmore (N.Y.) College senior Georgia Quackenbos (Strafford/Sharon) finished second in the limit fences class and sixth in limit flat during the Thoroughbreds’ victory over eight opponents at Morrisville (N.Y.) State in early November… Endicott (Mass.) College won a nine-team home show with senior Lucia Taylor (Lyme) finishing second in the limit flat class… Senior Paige Durrell (Windsor/Woodstock) produced a second-place finish in the first-level class for Johnson & Wales (R.I.) University’s Intercollegiate Dressage Association team during a meet at the University of Connecticut. The Wildcats also field an Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association squad.
Simmons College senior Sydney Gonyea (Lebanon) started 72 of the 73 career games in which she appeared for the Massachusetts-based Sharks, who were 18-4 this autumn. She was the team’s leading scorer for the third consecutive season, posting 26 goals and 10 assists. … Freshman goaltender Ashlee Blashock (Lebanon) started nine of the 11 games in which she appeared for Colby-Sawyer (12-7). She had a 1.48 GAA and a .077 save percentage. Her six shutouts are a program record. Amber Simonds (Windsor), a freshman defender, played in six games and for 39 minutes. Alyssa Slocum (Windsor), a senior forward, started three of the 19 games in which she played and produced four goals and three assists… Dean (Mass.) College was 8-12 with sophomore midfielder Keira Houdegbe (West Lebanon/Lebanon) starting 14 of the 17 games in which she saw action… St. Lawrence (5-11) was captained by junior midfielder Caroline Hamilton (White River Junction/Hartford), who started every game and led the team in points with 11 goals and four assists. Sophomore forward Lily Gubbins (Pomfret/Woodstock) also started every contest and contributed nine goals and three assists. Freshman forward Hannah Gubbins (Pomfret/Woodstock) appeared in 14 games and had two goals and an assist… Castleton (16-5) featured junior midfielder Peyton Richardson (Windsor), senior Amelia Wilson (Enfield/Mascoma), a defender and midfielder and freshman midfielder Kylie Rogers (Mascoma). Richardson started all of the 17 games in which she played and had nine goals and six assists. Richardson was the Spartans’ scoring leader, playing in every contest and producing 13 goals and 10 assists. Five of her tallies were winners. Rogers appeared in 12 games and had an assist… Clark (Mass.) University was 8-9 with graduate student Greer McCarty (White River Junction/Hartford), a forward, starting every game and contributing six goals and an assist…Senior defender Kaeli Bennett (Windsor) played in five games and started one for Smith College in Massachusetts, which was 6-12… Senior forward Kate Blaisdell (Hanover) started one of the 14 games in which she played for Northeastern (12-7)… Sophomore goaltender Reilly Loughman (Hanover) appeared in 13 minutes of one game for Hamilton (N.Y.) College… Mount Holyoke College was 8-11 for a second consecutive season and featured four locals: junior defender Taylor Vittori (Etna/Hanover), sophomore midfielder Alexina Peckinpaugh (Windsor), senior defender Glenna Ricard (Windsor) and senior defender Sophia Guziewicz (Enfield/Mascoma). Vittori started all 18 games she played. Peckinpaugh appeared in six games and Ricard in three contests, scoring once. Guziewicz played in 19 games and started 18 of them, leading the Lyons in scoring with 13 goals and one assist… Lasell (Mass.) University senior defender Paige Jette (Enfield/Mascoma) started eight of 16 games she played in, scoring twice and assisting once for the Lasers (10-9)… Mackenzie Labrie (Canaan/Mascoma), a graduate student and forward for Plymouth State (10-9), started 17 of the 19 matches she played in, posting three goals and three assists… Freshman forward Bryanna Thurston (Canaan/Mascoma) saw action in three games for the New England College Pilgrims (16-4)… Fitchburg (Mass.) State was 10-9 while enjoying the talents of sisters Samantha Yates and Sophia Yates (Woodstock). Sophia led the Falcons with 16 goals and two assists and Samantha contributed three goals and three assists. The sisters each appeared in every game… Johns Hopkins (18-3) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament after winning its sixth consecutive Centennial Conference title. Junior defender Mia Edmonds (Hanover) started 15 of the 20 games in which she appeared. Her sister, Brown senior goaltender Ella Edmonds (Hanover) suffered a season-ending injury after playing in only a preseason game for the Bears (9-8)… Keene State (16-7) won the Little East Conference title, the 15th in program history. Senior defender Hannah Wood (Brownsville/Windsor) started every game, scoring three times and assisting once. Keene State coach Amy Watson, a 1980 Hanover High graduate who pitched the Marauders to the NHIAA title game that spring, has won 499 games in her 35 seasons with the Owls and one more victory will make her the sixth active coach to reach 500… Southern New Hampshire was 16–4 and reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, losing in double overtime. Senior midfielder Eliza Bates (Newport) started every game during her final two college seasons, scoring five times and adding nine assists this autumn… St. Joseph’s (Maine) College was 10-11 with sophomore midfielder-forward Richelle Girard (Claremont/Stevens) starting 10 of the 18 games in which she played and scoring twice… Junior forward Kaedence Brower (Hartford), a transfer from Colby-Sawyer, helped the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) go 11-8 and scored once while playing in 13 games… York (Pa.) College won the Middle Atlantic Conference and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs’ second round. The Royals (17-6) had freshman defender Michaela Cokinos (KUA), who started one of the 13 games in which she saw action… Maine’s Husson University was 10-9 with junior defender Gracie Gardner (Wilder/Hartford) starting two of the 11 contests she played. Freshman midfielder Madison Willey (White River Junction/Hartford) started one of the 15 games she played and posted three goals and an assist.
Husson was 6-5 with freshman defensive back Brayden Trombly (White River Junction/Hartford) playing nine times and making 75 tackles, third among the Eagles. He also intercepted two passes… Bates was 2-7 and has enjoyed just two winning seasons since 1981. Junior defensive back Colin Pierce (Hanover) made 15 tackles. Freshman running back Jeffrey Vidou (Cornish/Hanover) carried 14 times for 30 yards. Senior defensive lineman Kyle Hamilton (Hartford) made 12 tackles, 3½ of them for a loss. All three Bobcats played in every game… Hamilton (N.Y.) College was 1-8, its lone triumph coming in the season finale over Bates. Junior linebacker Josh Bucci (Norwich/Hanover) played in eight games with five tackles… Junior Seamus Murphy (Norwich/Hanover) had his Plymouth State season ended after a game by injury. The Panthers were 5-4. Junior defensive lineman Harry Gaudet (Hartford) played in three games and made one tackle… Middlebury (Vt.) College was 6-3. Freshman receiver Brendan Logan (Norwich/Hanover) appeared in every contest and caught seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown… Castleton (3-7) featured junior defensive back C.J. Childs (Lebanon), who blocked a school season-record five kicks to push his career total to nine. He also contributed 29 tackles, a forced fumble and three interceptions, one of which he returned for a 50-yard touchdown. Freshman tight end Brody Tyburski (Quechee/Hartford) played in five games and caught four passes for 23 yards. Senior tight end Caden Lockwood (West Windsor/Windsor) caught three passes for 27 yards while appearing in six contests. Sophomore defensive lineman Lucas Smith (Claremont/Stevens) was in on eight tackles during five games… Fitchburg (Mass.) State (2-8) featured junior linebacker Zach Whitcomb (West Lebanon/Lebanon), who played in each game, made 18 tackles and forced a fumble. The Falcons are 3-37 during their past four seasons… Norwich was 0-10, and graduate student and receiver Henri Bourque (Claremont/Stevens) was widely involved while playing in every game. Bourque ran twice for minus-5 yards, completed 1 of 2 passes for 31 yards, caught 40 passes for 453 yards and four touchdowns and made two tackles. Sophomore defensive lineman A.J. Aldrich (White River Junction/Hartford) played in five games and made 40 tackles, including two sacks. The 5-foot-11, 320-pound Cadet also forced two fumbles. Norwich is 6-34 the past four years… Jack Stone (Plainfield/Lebanon), a redshirt sophomore safety at the University of New Hampshire (7-4), appeared in 10 games and made 14 tackles. He tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles… Junior running back Nyoti Penni (Lebanon) participated in four games for Holy Cross (5-6) but didn’t post any statistics… Avery Bean (Cornish/Windsor) played sprint football, in which players cannot weigh more than 178 pounds during two weekly trips to the scale, for St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) College. The Pomeroys (7-1) fell in the Midwest Sprint Football League title game and Bean, a lineman, appeared in two games with one tackle.
Vermont State Castleton’s men finished fourth at the six-team Little East Conference championships. Junior Brady Hathorn (Wilder/Hartford) led the Spartans by finishing fifth among individual competitors. He earned All-LEC honors for the third consecutive year. Hathorn shot an average round of 82.3. Classmate Jake Barry (South Royalton/White River Valley) shot five varsity rounds and averaged 87.2 per round… Sophomore Madison Mousley (East Thetford/Thetford Academy) led Keene State at the Northeast Women’s Golf Conference Fall Classic, where it finished seventh out of eight teams. Mousley shot a 91 and a 92 during her rounds at the two-day event… Southern Maine finished seventh out of 22 teams at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association championships. Freshman Jaden Poirier (White River Junction/Hartford) shot a 77 to tie for 13th among 112 competitors… St. Michael’s senior T.J. Beaver (Hanover) appeared once for the Purple Knights, shooting a 90 and a 93 during their second outing… The Middlebury women finished the fall season ranked No. 24 among NCAA Division III teams. Freshman Teegan Duffy (KUA) carded an 86 each of the two days of the Hamilton College Invitational to finish 53rd among 79 competitors. The Panthers were seventh out of 14 teams.. Franklin Pierce was 12th and last at the Post University Invitational to end their fall slate. The Ravens’ second-leading scorer was senior Dylan Adamovich (Claremont/Stevens), who shot 86-86-82 to finish 59th out of 68 competitors… Sophomore Casey Graham (Etna/Hanover) played six rounds for Hobart (N.Y.) College. The Statesmen competed in five fall tournaments. Graham’s average score was 79.7 and he was eight over par for the campaign

Freshman defender Everett Winslow (White River Junction/Hartford) started seven of the eight games in which he played… Diego Pascual-Sanchiz (KUA) was a senior midfielder at Union (6-8-5). He appeared in 12 games and put up two assists… Vermont Tech (1-11-2) featured junior Kaleb Swett (Windsor). He appeared in nine games, scoring one of his team’s eight goals for the season. Sophomore Josh Mather (Sharon/Woodstock) started two of the four contests in which he played. The Knights are 6-51-5 since the start of the 2019 campaign… Fifth-year midfielder Charlie Adams (Norwich/Hanover) started 13 of the 14 games in which he played for Brown (8-8-1) and posted one assist… Hamilton was 8-6-4 and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Freshman midfielder Zach Tracy (Norwich/Hanover) appeared in six games… Johns Hopkins (Md.) University was 13-3-5 and lost its third-round NCAA Division III game on penalty kicks. The Blue Jays won their second consecutive Centennial League title earlier in the season. Defender Logan Falzarano (Lebanon), a graduate student, started every game in his college career and had three assists this fall… Freshman forward Cabot McLaren (KUA) appeared in four games for UNH (7-3-7).

The Mules won their first postseason game since 2018 and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament’s third round. Sophomore midfielder Avery Barton (Bradford/Oxbow) started 14 of the 20 games in which she played, scoring twice and assisting five times. Senior fullback/forward Charlotte Johnson (Hanover) played in every contest and started 10 of them while contributing three goals and two assists… Norwich (10-6-4) enjoyed the services of freshman defender Carys O’Connor (KUA), who started four of 15 games in which she appeared and contributed an assist… Colby-Sawyer was 9-5-7. Freshman forward Maddy Minckler (Claremont/Stevens) played in 17 games and started nine of them, scoring two goals and adding three assists. Freshman defender Maddie LaVarnway (Claremont/Stevens) appeared in 10 games and sophomore midfielder Stella Lavertue (Claremont/Stevens) played 11 times and scored twice… VSU Johnson (7-5-1) featured sophomore defender Kayli Stapelfeld (Canaan/Mascoma), who appeared in 11 contests… St. Lawrence freshman defender Gwyn McGee (Lebanon/KUA) started two of the six games in which she played. Redshirt junior Sally Rainey (West Lebanon/Lebanon), the Wildcats’ captain and the conference goalkeeper of the year, played every minute in net, posting a 0.78 goals-against average and a .797 save percentage… Ella Perrault (Chelsea/White River Valley), a sophomore forward at Bard, appeared in 17 games and scored once… Bowdoin tumbled from reaching the third round of the NCAA Division III playoffs a year ago to 2-7-6 this fall. Sophomore forward Mary Rainey (West Lebanon/Lebanon) started every game and had two assists… Junior forward Elliot Rupp (Windsor) appeared in 19 games and started three times while contributing two goals and an assist for Pennsylvania’s Moravian University (9-5-6)… Sophomore forward Casey Havrda (Hanover) appeared in five games for St. Michael’s (11-4-4). Freshman forward-midfielder Kaiya Richard (Claremont/Stevens) played in 10 games and had two goals and two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Knight (Claremont/Stevens) played every minute, posting an 0.76 GAA and an 0.79 save percentage.
VSU Johnson was 8-15 in women’s volleyball. Freshman setter Delaney Goss (Wilder/Hartford) had 432 of her team’s 537 assists and tied for the Badgers’ lead with 80 sets, appearing in every match… Tufts junior sailor Courtland Doyle (Hanover) helped the Jumbos advance to the quarterfinals of the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association match championship. Tufts defeated Boston College and Bowdoin but lost to six other opponents in round-robin action. That left it matched with first-place Harvard in the quarterfinals and the Crimson prevailed… Norwich senior rugby player Marius Edwards (Unity/Newport) helped the Cadets (8-1) to the North Atlantic Collegiate Rugby Conference title, scoring a try during the 41-38 championship-game defeat of UVM… Freshman Sophia Taylor (Canaan/Mascoma) playing rugby at Norwich, produced three tries during a 45-10 defeat of New Hampshire by the program’s second team.
