College Basketball: Bulldogs Edge Bears in Ivy Opener

New Haven, Conn. — Trey Phills scored a career-high 23 points and Miye Oni added 17 points and made two steals in the final seconds as Yale held off Brown, 78-72, in an Ivy League opener on Friday night.

Brown’s Obi Okolie made a free throw to get the Bears (7-7) within a point, 73-72, before Phills made four free throws and Oni one in the final 24 seconds, the final two trips to the line set up by Oni steals.

Yale (8-9) led, 42-37, at halftime.

Princeton 72, Columbia 56

Princeton, n.j. — Devin Cannady scored 17 points with 6-of-12 shooting to lead Princeton (8-8, 1-1 Ivy) past Columbia (3-11, 0-1).

Sebastian Much added 13 points and Jerome Desrosiers had 12 for Princeton, which scored the game’s first eight points and never trailed. Cannady, Much and Desrosiers combined for 11 of the Tigers’ 15 buckets from 3-point range.

Columbia was led by Mike Smith’s 14 points and got 13 points from Quinton Adlesh.

Penn 69, Cornell 61

Philadelphia — AJ Brodeur scored 18 points with nine rebounds and six assists and Penn defeated Cornell for the 10th consecutive time.

Ryan Betley added 13 points and Darnell Foreman 12, including three free throws in the final minute for Penn (11-5, 1-1 Ivy League), which has won six of its last seven.

Stone Gettings scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds for the Big Red (6-8, 0-1) with Matt Morgan adding 13 points, his 37th straight double-figure game.
