SHARON — A Sharon town official and business owner faces criminal charges after he allegedly held a man at gunpoint when the man trespassed on his property on Monday afternoon.

Alexandre Bird, the Sharon health officer and owner of Inn at Idlewood, has been charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and unlawful restraint after a Tunbridge man allegedly trespassed on his property, Vermont State Police said in a news release.

Vermont troopers said they responded to a trespassing complaint at a residence in Sharon at 6 p.m. on Monday where an investigation determined that Bird, 68, held Howard Tatro, 42, of Tunbridge “at gunpoint (and) would not allow him to leave,” according to the news release.

Neither Bird, who lost a race for a contested seat on the Sharon Selectboard in 2022, nor Tatro, responded to messages left at listed telephone numbers for comment by deadline on Tuesday.

Bird was cited to appear in Windsor County Superior Court on June 23, according to the news release.
