Yvonne Josephine “Vonny” Cook

Norwich, Vt. — Yvonne Josephine “Vonny” Cook, aged 90, of Norwich passed away on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018.

Yvonne was born in London England on Sept. 20, 1927, to Emily (Higginson) and William Vandervleit. She and her older sister Denise, and younger brother Roy, were raised in Hackney, London near their extended family.

As a young teenager, Yvonne and her family survived the London Blitz of WWII. It was during the war when she went on a blind date and met her future husband, Wesley Cook, a United States Army Air Force Sergeant. They married in London in 1945 and moved to the United States a year later.

Yvonne and her husband settled in Norwich where they raised their four children. She liked learning history and researching ancestry. Yvonne was also creative and enjoyed crocheting, sewing and painting contemporary and historical scenes of Norwich. Some of her folk art can be seen at the Norwich Historical Society where she frequently volunteered.

Yvonne will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends for her kind, giving nature and her adventurous and cheerful spirit. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: son, Van Cook and his wife, Rosalyn, of Norwich; daughter, Patricia Gillespie and her husband, Bowen, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Donna Crabtree, of St. George Island, Fla.; and daughter, Wanda Erickson of Winter Park, Fla. She is also survived by five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; her brother, William “Roy” Vandervleit of Woodford Green, England; her nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

A memorial service and burial will be held in the spring in Hillside Cemetery, Norwich.
