Former Claremont Mayor Charlene Lovett lost her bid to unseat Ruth Ward, R-Stoddard, in the race for the District 8 New Hampshire state Senate seat.
Lovett, who switched party affiliations earlier this year from Republican to Democrat, was trailing Ward by about 3,600 votes with more than 95% of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press, which called the race on Wednesday morning.
Lovett was defeated in all 10 Sullivan County communities that are in the district, 7,516 to 5,918. Lovett lost in her hometown by 34 votes, 2,139 to 2,105. She narrowly won Ward I, 593-523; and Ward II, 840-832, while losing Ward III, 772-648.
Senate 8 also includes four towns in Cheshire County, six in Hillsborough County and one in Merrimack County.
