SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Those with a flair for steampunk can gain free admission to the 2019 Steampunk Festival by volunteering four hours of their time to support the event.

The festival takes place from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22, at Riverside Middle School and the Hartness House Inn, as well as other locations in downtown Springfield, Vt.

Volunteer responsibilities could include manning the ticket booth, providing security, managing other volunteers or assisting with festival activities. Volunteers must be age 16 and older, although younger volunteers can assist alongside their parents. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

“We’ve had some trouble getting people to volunteer,” said Steampunk Festival Coordinator Madison Moreau. “We want to bring in about 50 people total, but it’s not really capped yet at least.”

The Steampunk Festival is organized by the Steampunk Society of Vermont, which is based in Springfield, Vt. This will be the fourth year of the festival. The last one was held in 2017 and drew about 600 people from all around New England. Ticket proceeds benefit Vermont Steampunk’s STEAM scholarship fund.

“People surprisingly travel for steampunk,” Moreau said. “We’re hoping that even though we took last year off we still get that momentum.”
