Hartford — The Hartford Parks and Recreation Department is looking for volunteers to act as elves during the Hartford Polar Express event, scheduled for Dec. 9 and 10.

The annual event draws about 3,000 visitors for one-hour train rides throughout the weekend. The train rides leave from the White River Junction station and takes riders to the Norwich station, which is transformed into the North Pole.

There, children are greeted by volunteer elves before listening to the story The Polar Express and meeting Santa Claus.

Jay McDonough, program coordinator at the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department, said he needs about 30 volunteer elves each day to make the event a success.

“Obviously, the North Pole is busy. We try to outfit it with as many volunteer elves as possible,” he said. The elves will appear to be performing such duties as putting presents into Santa’s sleigh or baking cookies.

The event runs each day from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but volunteers are asked to commit only to a few hours, and the schedule is flexible.

Anyone 12 and older can volunteer on their own, and younger children are welcome to participate with adults.

The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for volunteers at the Norwich station, while the White River Junction Rotary handles the rest of the volunteer-run event. McDonough estimates that hundreds of people volunteer over the course of the weekend.

Volunteers can register at www.hartfordrec.com.
