FAIRLEE, Vt. — Matthew Campbell sits atop the leaderboard of the Jeff Julian Memorial Vermont Open Championship after the first round Monday at Lake Morey Resort and Country Club.

Campbell, a Rome, N.Y. native, shot three under par 67 to finish one stroke ahead of amateurs Thomas McCormick and Will Frodigh. Campbell, 32, recorded birdies on six holes, while posting only one bogey and one double bogey.

McCormick and Frodigh each birdied five holes in logging their 68s. McCormick was even with Campbell on the first nine holes and finished one stroke behind on the back nine. Frodigh did the opposite: he came in one stroke short of Campbell on the front nine, while playing him even on the back nine.

Matthew Baker, Garth McGee, and Tee Opperman all are tied for fourth at 69, one stroke under par. Jonathan Pannone and Alex Blickle tied at even with par 70 for seventh place, and eight golfers tied for ninth at one stroke over par.

Campbell tees off in the first group Tuesday at 7 a.m., while Frodigh will begin at 7:20 a.m. and McCormick at 12:55 p.m.
