CLAREMONT — Valley Regional Healthcare interim CEO Deanna Howard is retiring next month, according to a news release.

Howard, a health care consultant from Etna who previously served as vice president of regional development for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock system, had initially planned to stay at Valley Regional in Claremont for six to nine months when she took the post in February 2019. She replaced previous CEO Peter Wright, who left for a job in Maine.

Howard stayed on longer than initially planned due at least in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While it was meant to be short-term, Deanna went far and above that expectation, continuing our financial improvement and leading us through the tumultuous times of a pandemic,” Patricia Putnam, Valley Regional’s board chairwoman, said in Wednesday’s news release.

Dr. Jocelyn Caple, Valley Regional’s current chief medical officer, will take on the interim position when Howard steps down on Sept. 4. Caple, who came to Valley Regional earlier this summer, has previously been CEO of Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H., as well as its chief medical officer.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in ancient studies from Smith College, a Master of Business Administration from the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire and a medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Caple will oversee the Claremont hospital’s operations until a permanent CEO is hired, the release said.
