HARTFORD — A Saturday evening thunderstorm caused flooding and brought down power lines in the heart of the Upper Valley.

As a result of flooding from the storm, the White River Junction VA Medical Center relocated its emergency room from the Mountains Building to the ground floor of the Granite Building until further notice, according to a social media post on Sunday.

Vermont Emergency Management in a VT-Alert message asked that people avoid traveling in Hartford on Saturday evening because of “major flooding” in downtown areas and downed power lines throughout the town. Officials warned motorists not to drive through flooded roads.

Earlier in the evening, Hartford Police reported on social media that Sykes Mountain Avenue was blocked near Kenyon Drive, and that Maple Street and North Main Street were flooded.

Meanwhile in Lebanon, School Street by Messenger Street was closed due to downed wires, the city reported through its LebAlert system. The same message also indicated that emergency personnel were also “responding to multiple other reports of storm damage within the city” and that there were multiple power outages.

As of about 8 p.m., about 4,000 Liberty customers were without power in Lebanon.

On the Vermont side of the Upper Valley, there were nearly 1,100 people without power in Woodstock and 700 in Hartford, with outages also reported in Bridgewater, Hartland, Strafford, West Windsor and Weathersfield, according to Green Mountain Power.

Later in the evening, Lebanon also told residents the storm had disabled the municipal fire alarm monitoring system in the city’s downtown. The notice asked that residents in the downtown not assume emergency services have been notified when a fire alarm sounds. Instead, they should call 911 or Lebanon Communications at 603-448-1212 to report the alarm.
