HANOVER — State Sen. Martha Hennessey, D-Hanover, is backing New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker in the Democratic race for president.

“After spending time with Cory in the Upper Valley, seeing him inspire at the (recent state party) convention in Manchester and watching him show a command of the issues and deliver a unifying message on the debate stage once again, I’m proud to endorse Cory for president,” Hennessey said in a statement released by the Booker campaign on Friday.

“Cory will motivate the voters we need to turn out in 2020, and, as president, repair the damage of the Trump years and make justice and opportunity real for every American.”

The 65-year-old Hennessey, one of the most prominent Democrats in the Upper Valley, has been active on such issues as gun safety and reproductive rights.

An educational psychologist, Hennessey is the chairwoman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and represents a district that stretches from Lyme to Charlestown and includes Hanover, Lebanon and Claremont.

She backed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary.

Booker, 50, is a former mayor of Newark, N.J., and was a Rhodes Scholar before earning a law degree at Yale. The Booker campaign said Hennessey is the third state senator in New Hampshire to back his campaign for president.
