Passenger in Braintree, Vt., crash dies from injuries; driver faces felony charges

BRAINTREE, Vt. — A driver who attempted to elude police between back-to-back crashes in Braintree, Vt., has been charged with grossly negligent operation a vehicle with death resulting, after an elderly passenger died from his injuries, according to police.

Raymond Martin, 80, of Eden, Vt., died Tuesday at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon after he suffered a broken back and rib injuries in an Aug. 12 crash, Vermont State Police reported in a news release on Wednesday.

A 12-year-old passenger and an 11-year-old passenger, both from Randolph, also sustained minor injuries in the crash and were treated at Gifford Medical Center, police said.

Two other passengers in the vehicle, Heather Quinn, 39, of Randolph, and Michael Vell, 46, of Lexington, S.C., were uninjured.

According to state police, troopers responded at about 8 p.m. to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Braintree Hill Road. After they arrived at the scene and began talking with the driver, he drove off with the passengers inside the vehicle and “crashed a short distance from the original crash scene,” the news release said.

The driver, identified as Pedro Guadalupe, of Springfield, Mass., has been charged with eluding a police officer, grossly negligent operation a vehicle with death resulting, duty to stop and reckless endangerment, said Vermont State Police, which said it is continuing to investigate the incident and working with the Orange County State’s Attorney’s Office in the matter.

A Vermont State Police spokesman said investigators assessed the injuries to the passengers were sustained in the second crash while fleeing police.
