HARTFORD — Police say a toddler who fell into the White River on Saturday afternoon has died.

The circumstances surrounding how Heaven Lindon McEwan, 1½, of Windsor, drowned under the Quechee-West Hartford Bridge remain under investigation, Hartford police Deputy Chief Brad Vail said Tuesday.

The girl was at the bridge that day with her father and others, Vail said.

Members of Hartford emergency services responded and continued life-saving efforts started by bystanders, and the girl was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

“The child fell in the water,” Vail said. “We are investigating the circumstances that led up to that. We still have a lot of interviews to do.”

The girl’s obituary states she died on Monday following the “tragic accident.” She leaves behind her father, Isaac McEwan; her mother, Teresa Terrazas; a sister; two grandparents; and four great-grandparents.

Attempts to reach family members on Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.
