The Sharon Academy to open with ‘hybrid’ schedule

SHARON — The Sharon Academy plans to re-open on a “hybrid” schedule next month to practice social distancing and limit the number of students in its middle and high school buildings.

Under the plan announced in a news release over the weekend, TSA will allow only half of its students on campus at any one time “to allow them to maintain safe distancing” when it opens the week of Sept. 8, new Head of School Mary Newman said in a statement released Saturday.

Students at the grades 7-12 independent school will be divided into two cohorts, with a “Green” group on campus Mondays and Tuesdays and the “Phoenix” cohort at the school on Thursdays and Fridays.

No students will be on campus on Wednesdays, which will be devoted to “all-school virtual gatherings and staff meetings,” Newman’s announcement said. TSA buildings will also be “deep cleaned between each cohort group,” she said.

Students and staff will wear masks and be expected to “practice good social distancing,” and students will attend all of their classes while on campus, she said.

Newman said TSA officials have “concluded that to open our buildings to 100% in-person school would be irresponsible,” but that the hybrid schedule is “in keeping with the Step II guidelines set forth by the State of Vermont’s Agency of Education.”

“Faculty are aware of the importance of designing meaningful, reasonable school work for students during their time at home. Using feedback from a parent survey TSA sent out in June, teachers are meeting regularly to discuss and implement best practices around remote learning,” she said in her announcement.
