East Thetford — Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center in East Thetford is looking for teen volunteers to be junior counselors for the farm’s summer day camp.

The farm camp runs for six weeks throughout July and August. Junior counselors, who must be at least 14 years old, are needed to help engage with the campers, who are ages 6 through 11. Junior counselors help campers with activities ranging from exploring wooded areas to working in the greenhouses on the farm.

“What we look for is teens who enjoy spending time with young kids, who want to be outside on the farm, serving as role models and mentors to younger kids,” said Eric Tadlock, education programs manager at the farm.

Junior counselors work closely with educators and support staff who oversee the camp. The volunteer position gives teens the opportunity to work closely with kids, while also learning about sustainable, organic agriculture, Tadlock said.

“They’re helping kids to have authentic learning experiences here on the farm, and helping them understand still many natural relationship that go into good, sound organic agriculture,” he said. “We want teens who can demonstrate inquisitiveness and can show kids how exciting the farm can be.”

Junior counselors are asked to commit to at least one week of camp.

Although this is a volunteer position, Tadlock said it is a great way for young teens to gain work experience. Many junior counselors have gone on to work in other areas of the farm, he said.
