WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Two members of the Upper Valley Aquatic Club each recorded a pair of top-five results at the Speedo Sectionals Spring Short Course meet in Christiansburg, Va., on March 26-28.

Cailey Stockwell, of Hopkinton, N.H., and Will Kainen, of White River Junction, were among seven UVAC swimmers to qualify for the meet and were the only two who made the trip to southwest Virginia. Both raced in four events at sectionals.

Stockwell, a junior at Hopkinton High, reached the championship finals in two events. The 16-year-old was third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2 minutes, 23.03 seconds and added a fifth-place finish in the 100 breast (1:06.18). The latter came after a fifth-place time in the preliminaries (1:06.52). Stockwell had dropped five seconds off her previous best at a home meet on March 13 to qualify for sectionals in the 200 breast.

Stockwell made the consolation final in the 200 individual medley, finishing 12th in that event (2:12.37) after a 16th-place result in qualifying (2:13.74). She also swam to 22nd place in the 200 freestyle (1:59.95).

Kainen, a junior at Suffield (Conn.) Academy, was runner-up in his two championship finals. He was second in the 100 breaststroke (56.73) as well as the 200 breast (2:05.25); both times qualified Kainen for competition at the USA Futures level down the road. The 18-year-old also was 21st in the 50 free (22.23) and disqualified in the 200 IM because of a false start.

Five other UVAC swimmers — Woodstock’s Isabelle Hiller, West Windsor’s Salli Lubbe and Hanover’s Grace Wenger, Maggie Wenger and Chris Rieseberg — also qualified for Virginia but didn’t attend the meet.
